In Winchester Frederick and Clarke counties the lightest Democratic primary vote in memory produced overwhelming wins for Colgate W. Darden and William M. Tuck. Darden carried Winchester 358 to 43 and 46 for Cary while Tuck had 326 to 91 for Plunkett. Clarke votes favored Darden 350 to 17 for Page and 54 for Cary. Tuck had 342 to 61 for Plunkett. In Frederick Darden led 536 to 21 for Page and 18 for Cary. Total turnout: Winchester 447 Frederick 575 Clarke 411. Observers noted the weak local contest and Darden’s strong machine backing as factors. In most Frederick precincts Darden and Tuck topped the totals. defections were rare.
