The Senate voted 50 to 27 against Taft's substitute to limit army selectee service to six months beyond a one year term. The proposal aimed to modify pending administration legislation allowing draftees to be held up to a total of 18 months after training.
Weather forecast for August 5 to August 9 shows scattered showers in Maryland and Virginia tonight and in southern Virginia Wednesday. Generally fair elsewhere with clouds along the coast. Moderate temperatures Thursday and Friday, cool nights, warming by weekend with near normal average temperatures for the next four days.
MA Winchester reports the Junior Board of Trade congratulates itself for efforts to mobilize voters today. The board says it is not aligned with any candidate and simply wants every eligible citizen to cast a ballot as a civic duty.
The House approved a large defense tax bill by 369 to 30 but kept discussing possible Senate refinements. A joint filing provision was removed after President Roosevelt objected, as lawmakers noted it would raise substantial revenue by forcing married couples to file jointly.
Maurice M. Lynch, 87, the dean of the Frederick county bar, was seen at his Reuss avenue office for several hours yesterday, first time since a four month illness. He had been treated at Martinsburg hospital for gland disorders and surgery, but returned home to Washington street and greeted by friends before resuming duties.

Chicago August 5 railroad unions demanded wage hikes for 350000 operating workers seeking 30 percent raises. Carriers said increases would add about 900 million dollars yearly and unworkable costs. Non operating Brotherhoods sought 30 to 34 cent hourly raises for about 800000 workers. management noted over 40 percent wage-cost rise. Continued on page 2 col 6.
Washington August 5 Secretary of State Hull said he hopes to obtain direct assurances from Vichy that the French government will reject any Axis demands for military concessions in French African territories. Berlin August 5 The official news agency DNB reported that most of the Russian air force has been eliminated by the Luftwaffe, with remaining planes avoiding air battles whenever possible.
A Chinese diplomatic source said events in Thailand were moving toward a swift and terrible climax. British officials remained silent on potential naval and military movements in the Far East.
London report says a German submarine surrendered to H. M. S. Broadway formerly U S S Hunt, one of 50 United States destroyers transferred to Britain last September. The disclosure cites decorations awarded to officers and crew.
Riverton Lime and Stone Company stopped nearly all work as labor unrest affected about 200 employees. W. E. Carson said the dispute’s scope was unclear but expected to be resolved tonight or tomorrow. Workers have been organized and working under a contract amid defense-driven orders.

Ruth B. Eskey, a Homestead hospital X ray technician, was found stabbed and beaten in her east end apartment. Her 15 year old son John Richard Eskey, home from Randolph-Macon in Virginia, was slightly cut and an officer said Eskey was detained for questioning. Her condition was fair at Shadyside Hospital.
Robert A. Magill Jr. of Lynchburg contracted infantile paralysis while visiting his aunt Miss Elizabeth Bradford at Boyce. He had swum Friday night at Blue Ridge Country Club Millwood. Pool closed and authorities guard against spread. This is the only case reported in the area this year.
Bangkok August 5 tank headquarters for Thailand's eastern armed forces has been set up at Battambang in Cambodia area recently moved from French Indo China. Official announcement said today.
Leon Henderson head of the Office of Price Administration told Congress that even with a price control law the nation would face the strongest and most pronounced rise in living costs as the economy risked inflation. He cited charts showing prices nearing 1929 levels and 1919 peaks while detailing proposed broad presidential power to cap prices for most goods and rents in defense areas.
An exceedingly light vote was cast in Winchester with only four precinct totals reported at 3 PM. Votes went to governor candidates Colgate Darden Vivian Page and Hunsdon Cary and lieutenant governor candidates Moss Plunkett and William Tuck. Returns will be compiled at The Star office tonight for Winchester and Frederick and Clarke counties.

She will show colored slides of Atlanta area flower shows with running descriptions. An authority on flowers she has lectured for 12 years. The public is invited with no charge.

Four gunmen abducted two Stroudsburg First National Bank messengers on a street and stole a bag containing about 76000 in old bills. They fled in a sedan across the Delaware River into New Jersey, then abandoned the car and disappeared.
U S warships Northampton and Salt Lake City sail on a training cruise to the South Pacific as tensions rise in the Far East Bangkok reports Japan pressing Thailand for bases while London cites massing Japanese troops near Russia. Harry Schoenhut of Oscar Nebel Hosiery Co in New York City urged that 500 workers at Winchester and Staunton plants avoid layoff after the OPM silk processing order took effect. Sen Byrd in Washington said efforts will secure sufficient silk to prevent job loss while plants switch to mixed material styles. The Winchester plant counts 140 workers and will shift to low silk content hosiery as changes are completed tonight with potential six months silk stock.
Six Winchester selectees left this morning for Roanoke to be inducted into the army. The group includes Charles W. Ritter, Richard Allen Hunter, Lewis Marshall Boyd, Clyde Preston Houston, Bentley Kinney, and John E. Harris Jr. They were seen off by Peyton Marshall, chairman of the Winchester Selective Service Board.
State Trooper B E Williams and Trial Justice A J Tavenner arrested and sentenced Albert Viands for driving under the influence. Viands lacked 45 cents of 120.20, then paid with 25 and 20 cents from the officers, returning next day with the balance. Other first voters on primary day included Tom Boyd and others. Police probed a Winchester dwelling disturbance as a bar caused sleep disruption and elusive intruder evaded capture.
Berlin radio reported from "competent quarters" in Berlin that Kholm 250 miles northwest of Moscow and Bel Tserkov 50 miles south of Kiev are under German control.
