Explosion follows a night of fear and excitement as radicals target the mayor's residence. Reports indicate outrages in other cities amid the upheaval.
Bombs exploded at two subway stations in Manhattan causing extensive damage and injuring many. Police found a nitroglycerin scent box as the federal government joined the investigation. Guards patrol stations as investigators work to identify suspects amid reports linking Sacco and Vanzetti sympathizers.
The Wadesville Farmers Union held its annual picnic at Pidgeon’s meadow on August 4. About 32 autos attended along with families and children. Speakers included Rev. Harper John M Fishpaw and Dabney Harrison with Roy Coates performing songs. ice cream and cake closed the day.
R T Jones and W F Pingley both shot 75 straight at the Winchester Gun Club practice. Jones and Claude B Stickley led high guns with 98 out of 100. Local members plan to attend the state tournament at Farmville next month.
The largest Handley Field crowd watched the Lions defeat the Elks 6 to 4 to share first place in the Inter-Club standings. Hockman starred for Lions with a homer and six strikeouts, while McCauley fanned six for the Elks. The game featured strong pitching and a tight seven innings as the two clubs edge toward a tie deciding round. The two clubs will resume with the Rotary and Kiwanis series starting next Tuesday as the season moves forward.
In New York on August 6 pools continued to push up prices in a brief session of the stock market. About a dozen issues reached new record highs as selling appeared detached from news, driven by belief the market’s technical position was weakened by the prior sustained advance. Closing was heavy with about 1,000,000 shares traded.

Winchester will send about 270 firefighters to the 82nd Caperee Valley Firemen's Association convention in Westernport Maryland next Wednesday and Thursday. The Friendship Fire Company will enter a 150 dollar reel race and a parade competition with 100 uniformed men and a 36 piece Handley High School Band. Sarah Zane Fire Company will attend with 80 uniformed men and 20 piece drum corps.
About 120 Winchester and Frederick county militiamen depart Sunday for a 15 day encampment at the Virginia Beach rifle range. The 2,200 total officers and men from the 116th and 183rd Infantry will travel via the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and return on August 21.
Maj Gen Leonard Wood governor general of the Philippine Islands is a patient at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Officials announced the admission after hospital staff had denied he was there. He was admitted days ago and is under observation with no details on condition or possible surgery released.
The Winchester Star newsboys receive free invites to the Bob Morton Circus on Friday August 12 joining the main show with flying acts clowns aerialists and jungle animal display headlined by Tarzan the Golden Lion and chimpanzees. Trainers Walter Beckwith leads the animal exhibit. Hand and head balancers Large and Morgner, former newsboys from Columbus, appear as a headline number.
The Empire Theatre offers 400 balcony seats for adults at 25 cents each every night including Saturday with 10 to 15 cents for children. Tonight features Richard Barthelmess Harold Lloyd and Bebe Daniels while Monday or Tuesday shows Clara Bow in It. Colonial Theatre matches with 25 cent balcony and 35 cent orchestra prices and matinees 10 15 or 25 cents. Matinees and evenings run Friday and Saturday with new comedy and shorts at both venues.

Captain Jacob Warden 86 a Clarke County farmer and Hardy County West Virginia native died at his home aged 86 from infirmities. Survived by wife Sarah Clagett Warden three children Mrs George Atkinson of Berryville Mrs Samuel Parkins of Fort Defiance and Harry C Warden of Clarke County. Funeral at home Sunday with burial in Green Hill Cemetery. He served in the Confederate Army joining the Eighteenth Virginia Cavalry later commanding in the Seventh Virginia Cavalry and was a prisoner at Johnson's Island until end of the war.
Governor Ange Garstale Byrd reported strong interest in a new state county road program after a rainy Purcellville gathering. He expects additional meetings across Virginia with counties invited to Lexi on August 27 to discuss statewide cooperation, material purchasing, and cost savings.
