Thomas B. Spillman, about 21, lost his right arm near the shoulder when a wringer pulled it into a rapidly revolving shaft at Lewis Jones Knitting Company. He freed himself by wrenching the arm free and was taken to hospital in critical but improving condition.
John H Seal Jr resigned four years ago to become deputy collector of internal revenue and was reinstated this week with Postmaster Harry C Stouffer approval. Under postal law, officials who resign may be reinstated within five years with approval. Seal is assigned to city parcel post carrier service, relieving Robert Grim who moves to a clerical post.
The Rev. John H. Parlett charges Levi Boyd of Nain with entering Parlett land, cutting and hauling timber. Trial in county magistrate’s court is scheduled for 11 o’clock tomorrow. sheriff ordered Boyd to appear and several witnesses summoned for the complainant.
Gertrude Ederle, 20, began the attempt from Cape Gris Nez at 7 09 a m. in calm weather but faced a rough sea as she swam toward Dover. By 1 p m she was over 12 miles across with the wind against her and weather unchanged.
The Handley High School band from Winchester made its radio debut on KNRM and CNRO in La Presse Studio after a Lafontaine Park concert. The Shenandoah Valley party, touring Canada, received warm welcome in Ottawa Montreal and Quebec with civic leaders discussing the Shenandoah National Park and cross-border cooperation.
The Corporation court grants an absolute divorce to Mrs. Minerva Murnan from George W. Murnan. A previous partial decree from July 18, 1921 is merged into the final order. Murnan must pay the plaintiff’s counsel fee and neither party may remarry for six months. Miss Joyce Arthur of Altavista, Va., visits Miss Nancy Louise Steele in the city. they were classmates at the State Teacher's College in Harrisonburg, Va.

Baltimore, Md Aug 6 The Rev William A Koontz a longtime member of the Baltimore Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church died at his home after a yearlong illness He was 85 and had served the conference for 60 years He is survived by a son the Rev Richard G Koontz pastor of Eastport Methodist Episcopal Church Annapolis and a daughter Miss Mary Koontz of Baltimore
The Rev. Mr. Koontz served Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church about 37 years ago and was a powerful sincere preacher with deep consecration. He was happy and genial, winning lasting friendships during his pastorate. Now retired, Mrs. Koontz is deceased and their two children, the Rev. Richard Koontz and Miss Mary Koontz, were small children then.
Floyd Reynolds of Star Tannery Virginia was discharged from Memorial Hospital after a 13 day stay following a road accident near Stephenson. He was returning from Strasburg to Millville West Virginia when his Ford hit a telephone pole, leaving him with cuts bruises and a broken arm. He works as a steam shovel engineer at Millville.
New York August 6 The Associated Press reports a broader demand for stocks as the market resumes its upward movement. Call money rose to 4 1/2 percent with a strong close. Total volume approached two million shares.
Local police enforce a new ordinance from Tuesday night requiring all vehicles to park parallel to the curb. An exception exists on Cameron south of Piccadilly street for 45 degree angle parking. Loudoun street remains parallel with curb but allows either wheel to curb.
Funeral for W. O. Gochenour held at his Woodlawn avenue home with Rev. F. T. McFaden officiating. Hymns included Nearer My God to Thee Asleep in Jesus and Tarry With Me. Burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Survivors: widow four children Robert C. Gochenour of Lost River W Va brother James Gochenour of Baker W Va and two half siblings. He died after a brief illness at age 65.
Home made pies and cakes will be sold at W P Anderson's store on Saturday August 7. Proceeds will aid the United Brothers of Church benefit. Items offered include oven fresh desserts and caterer quality treats.

Richard C. Bearse, 26, son of County Treasurer Fred A. Bearse, killed his divorced mother Mrs. Etta S. Bearse and mutilated her body in their Springfield residence. Police found him by the body claiming his mother had died twice and he revived her both times. He offered incoherent explanations and was arrested. Mrs. Bearse, 50 to 55, occupied the house with her son after a 14 year divorce.
In New York on August 6, Patrolman O Ehlkering, 26, was killed during a cafe robbery near Broadway and the White Light area. A suspect named Albert Mack was wanted after two bandits fled with $20 as other officers battled them, with Mack confessing to the robbery but denying the officer’s shooting.

R Gray Williams of Winchester was unanimously elected president of the Virginia State Bar Association at its Hot Springs convention. The longtime lawyer, banker, and university supporter is slated to lead the association for the coming year and comes from a family with deep legal roots in Winchester.
At Chanute Field near Rantoul Illinois Lieut C E Partridge from Chicago died when his biplane tailspun and crashed. Flying Cadet Harold C Wilson from Selfridge Field Michigan flew to Partridge's aid and crashed nearby. he was unconscious. Partridge died. Lieut J R Wolf also from Chicago was seriously injured. Both were reserve officers on two weeks of summer training.
