Berlin officials announced a relaxation of the Soviet financial blockade. The move came after talks in Moscow with Western envoys and Prime Minister Stalin and allows partial release of funds to meet weekend payments for Berlin's East and West sectors.
A damage suit verdict awarded the Saum family of Edinburg $2050 for property damage from changes in R. 11 in 1944. The award, granted by a viewing commission, named J Sloan Kuykendall of Winchester as their attorney.
Virginia health officials report 123 polio cases for 1948. Two new Alexandria infections involve a 28 year old man and a 25 year old woman. A 14 year old girl in Norfolk county also adds to the total.
CIO Textile Workers Union approves a contract boosting hourly wages by 16 cents on average for 18 000 employees across seven American Viscose Corp plants including Front Royal and Roanoke Virginia. The deal runs to Nov 30, 1949 with talks to reopen in June. average pay rises to about 1.45 per hour.
A Sicilian diver claims three submerged cities off Sicily dating 4000 to 5000 B C. Dr Bernardo Brea doubts such ancient cities exist and suggests Roman remains may have slid into the sea. Frank E Brown concurs no evidence supports such antiquity in the region.
Fanny Blankers-Koen, 30, star of Holland’s track team and mother of two, holds or shares four Olympic records and entered six events at London 1948. She won the 100 meters and broke the 80 meters hurdles world mark with 11.2 seconds while skipping the broad jump at her husband’s advice. Her husband and trainer may decide additional event entries as she contemplates retirement after these Games.
Clearbrook Volunteer Fire Dept. unveils a new hose carrying trailer adding 1000 ft of 2 inch and 500 ft of 1.5 inch hose stored in three compartments. The setup complements 1100 ft on the truck, giving over a half mile of total firefighting hose.
President R. E. Aylor said Stephens City Fire Co. grossed 1625 from a two day lawn party with net profits still to be determined. Bills are not all in yet, but he estimates profits will exceed 1000 and thanks donors and workers. A deep freeze unit donated by Mervil Adams boosted the gross.
Civilian Air Patrol members meet at Winchester airport to plan a breakfast flight to Taneytown Maryland on Sunday August 15 starting at 7 30 a m with 20 to 25 members expected to fly 12 planes in a prior breakfast flight to Martinsburg airport involved 22 members. Commander L G Sjostrom leads CAP.
The Charlie Rouss Fire Co schedules its monthly meeting for Friday August 6 at 8:00. Friendship Fire Co also sets a monthly meeting for Thursday August 5 at 8:00. A yard party at Cross Junction is planned for Saturday August 7. A trustees sale of a partially built building and lumber occurs Saturday August 7 at 12 noon at the County Court House. Futures trading in apples will begin on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange August 16, marking the first time this commodity is authorized for futures. Four contracts are set, including Washington Delicious apples in October and 1949 January, and Washington Winesap apples in December and 1949 February, with a trading unit of 800 boxes.
Six city organizations back a fundraising festival at the old airport on Route 50 to aid the Winchester Memorial hospital. Delmer Robinson, festival chairman, confirms Kiwanis Rocary Lions Exchange Rotary and Junior auxiliary support with nightly themes from Kiwanis Monday to Rotary Thursday. Proceeds go toward enlarging and improving hospital facilities.
TEL AVIV Aug. 54 Israel's government asked Count Folke Bernadotte to transmit its invitation to Arab nations for peace talks. Bernadotte, UN mediator for Palestine, met Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett for three hours before delivering the invitation to meet the provisional government for negotiations.
A report of uranium raw material shipments to Russia during the war was cited to Congress as it probes Communist activity in government. Rep. McDowell described the shipments but did not disclose details amid a White House Capitol Hill clash over anti inflation probes and loyalty investigation papers.
Hampton August meeting depends on Richmond session. G Alvin Massenburg says committee to decide on calling the State convention back to consider nominating its own presidential slate and VP, plus handling about $12 000 from last April's Jefferson Jackson fundraiser dinner. Convention adjourned July 2 with two thirds vote to reconvene.
The State Corporation Commission authorized six Virginia railways to raise intra state passenger fares, matching interstate increases. The new basic coach rate rises to 2 1 2 to 3 cents per mile, and Pullman rates to 3 1 2 to 4 cents per mile, effective August 15.
Washington August 5 Senate Republicans yield to southern Democrats and drop Truman civil rights program focused on anti poll tax. The bill aimed to outlaw poll taxes and address lynching and employment discrimination, but southern opposition blocks action, ending the 1948 effort.
The House passed a Republican anti inflation bill by 264 to 97 after blocking Truman price rationing and wage controls. The measure returns to the Senate with provisions: wartime buying curbs, tighter bank credit, and boosted Federal bank gold reserves. President Truman dismissed it as feeble opposition to inflation.
Mal Whitfield finished third in the 400 meter, behind Arthur Wint and Herb McKenley of Jamaica, as Wint clocked a record equalling 46.2 seconds. The U S ace aimed to add the 400 to his 800 title but could not, while Bruce Bruce was runner up in diving and American swimmers added more event medals. A drizzly, 50,000 crowd watched the sixth day opening events in London.
U S district attorneys and Federal Housing expeditors from across the nation meet to launch an all out campaign against those who violate federal laws in the construction, sale and financing of veterans homes. The Justice Department says hundreds of investigations are and will be pursued by the FBI as part of the drive.
President Truman condemned the 80th Congress for feeble compromises on his anti inflation program and urged Republican leaders to rethink adjournment plans. He accused Rep. Wolcott of blocking testimony from three cabinet members and said the administration sought hearings on Brannan Sawyer Krug agendas to curb prices and shortages.
Senate Banking Committee rejects the subcommittee housing bill and votes to send an amended Taft-Eli bill to the Senate. McCarthy vows to fight on the floor over the substitute and predicts a conference path if the modified TEW advances.
