McGovern Deliberates Veep Pick After Muskie Talk

Sen. George S. McGovern spent two hours with Sen. Edmund S. Muskie about the Democratic vice presidential nomination. Muskie’s office declined further comment. McGovern said three senators refused the post but he is taking time to decide, aiming to name a replacement for Eagleton by Monday. He confirmed discussions with Humphrey Ribicoff and Kennedy, all of whom said no.

Rockefeller Veep Rumors Circulate in West Virginia Race

Wholesale Prices Post Sharp Rise in July

Wholesale prices rose eight tenths of one percent in July driven by farm products and processed foods and feeds. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes Phase 2 wage price controls show an annual 5.7 percent rise over eight months, with unemployment steady at 5.5 percent and total employment about 83.4 million. Average hourly earnings rose to 3.62 dollars with weekly pay up 4.58 dollars over the year.

Strike at State Penitentiary Paralyzes Maximum Security Unit

Prison superintendent Addison E. Slayton Jr says 44 inmates in the maximum security section have not worked for two months. Recreation and dining privileges are suspended. Slayton blames four or five inmates who coerced others, with 6 to 8 maintenance workers affected. 1500 Men Struggle to Encircle Big Sur Forest Fire

In Big Sur California 1500 firefighters battled a 4100 acre blaze aided by a U2 reconnaissance plane. Dense fog and diminishing winds aided containment efforts with 70 percent reached and full containment expected. Six firefighters injured including one seriously after a 200 foot fall. The Ventana Wilderness fire began Tuesday from an illegal campfire.

Weather clears as cold front crosses state

A cold front moving across the state brings relief from recent warmth and humidity. Showers and thunderstorms accompany the front as it passes southward. Local business notices list store hours and promotions including Wilkins' Shoe Center and Snag's Sports Shop with new Friday hours starting Aug. 4.
