Harrisburg August 3 A Pennsylvania House committee investigating Governor George H Earle and 13 associates subpoenaed District Attorney Carl B Shelley to testify at its first hearing tomorrow Shelley has prepared evidence for a grand jury probe and Judge Paul N Schaef fer barred him from testifying before the legislature The committee asked the judge to rescind his order and release Shelley s evidence.
Baltimore on August 3 Edward Lynch former secretary and treasurer of a motor company was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary for embezzling funds.
President Roosevelt and his party finished a sea fishing trip near Cocos Island before the U S S Houston departed for Balboa in the Panama Canal zone. The voyage to Balboa is expected to reach tomorrow afternoon. A 1650 pound marlin, harpooned by the destroyer McDougal crew, dominated the day’s catches with the 15 by 9 foot specimen displayed aboard.
Navy aviation authorities announced two long range patrol bomber flights to Hawaii planned for September and November 1938, and a 16 plane Panama run from San Diego on Aug 31. These events will complete the service's mass distance flights for the year.
City council heard a strong protest against granting a permit to erect a filling station at North Loudoun and North Avenue and received a petition signed by about 60 residents. The meeting approved a street and infrastructure agenda and set a special session to review Fairmont Avenue improvements.

Roosevelt supporters and anti administration candidates split the Democratic honors in four primaries. Senator Bennett Clark and Senator George McGill secured renomination in landslides with party backing, while President Roosevelt stayed out. Three West Virginia House nominees who backed him won, but two Virginia New Dealers were defeated. In Kansas, former Gov Clyde Reed won the GOP nomination in a race where Gerald Winrod placed third after being accused of pro Nazi ties. Reed led with about 22 000 more votes than Dallas Knapp and 26 000 ahead of Winrod.
Mrs. Elizabeth Senseney Kirkpatrick of Lexington, aged 101, writes from Middletown to Grace Church pastor Rev. J. T. Brown expressing regret at missing the memorial chimes dedication next Sunday. Her daughter Mrs. Robert Gillock may attend in her stead. she notes 88 years as a Grace Church member since age 13 and extends Congratulations and good wishes for the church’s future.
Glenn Bowman 22 of Harrisonburg Va was discharged from Memorial Hospital and released on 500 bond after a motorcycle crash at Braddock Street and North Avenue injuring Beulah Rudolph 34. The bike was reported stolen along with its license plates. Carden Kelly of Tennessee is also free on 500 bond. Authorities said a warrant may be issued there for no reckless driving with bonds returnable Monday September 12.

In Virginia, conservative Rep How ard W Smith clinched renomination in the eighth district beating Rooseveltsupporter Norman R Hamilton and Roosevelt foe William E Dodd Jr. 19 601 to 6 530 as Darden unseated Hamilton in the second district 18 907 to 17 360 with Shafer fourth. Hamilton accused Darden of Democratic machine backing. Ickes alleged Smith tried to ride PWA coattails. Dodd campaigned vigorously while Smith ran a quiet, undramatic race pending further political battles.
Berryville contractor A N Ritter was the lowest bidder for a home economics cottage and a shop for vocational classes at Berryville High School. His bid of 7034 dollars plus about 100 dollars for miscellaneous items may proceed to construction, aiming for completion by October 15. The Clarke County schools plan to start soon with the new term beginning September 8.
