1000 Boats To See Race At St Michaels Regatta

ST. MICS Md Aug 2 More than 1000 boats are expected to come here next weekend to watch about 400 racing craft in nearly 90 classes. About 100 trophies will be awarded including the governor's cup for historic log canoes. Capt Nichols Hardcastle, chair of the racing committee, says adjustments to the inner course and new collapsible buoys will reduce interference this year. Log canoes may use shrouds on forecasts due to expensive hollow masts, speed boats vie for the Miles river trophy, and an unlimited power race caps the three day regatta ending with a run from Eastern day to Baltimore. The log canoe races are the highlight, tracing origins to Indians who built canoes from a single log.
