Many Would Pull Switch For Pennsylvania Electric Chair
Harrisburg reports a long line of applicants seeking to replace Robert G. Elliott as Pennsylvania’s official executioner. Among candidates are a 24 year old with a bad foot, a painter offering cut rates, a Pittsburgh welder who handled 2200 volts, and a 170 pound steel worker. The job pays 250 dollars per switch plus 150 for each further execution. No one will likely be chosen soon as the Pardon Board reprieved six men and no executions are scheduled until late next month. Elliott, improving at a New York home, has electrocuted 110 men and one woman in Pennsylvania since 1926 and also worked for other states. Applications began after reports he might retire.
