In Martinsburg West Virginia Mrs Odess attempted suicide with a revolver. She fired a shot but survived and was treated for injuries. Police reported the incident occurred amid personal distress and were investigating motives and circumstances.
Mrs. Odessa Ritter, wife of Lester Ritter, attempted suicide at her Martinsburg home. Standing with a ten month old in her arms she fired a bullet into her left breast but the bullet narrowly missed the heart. she is said to have an even chance for life at City Hospital. Her ill health and melancholia were noted by relatives.
All members of Friendship Fire Company are requested to meet in the lower hall of the engine house at 7 45 to attend the annual banquet. G R Haines, Secretary. 28-1p-31.
The Truck Committee of the Float Committee for the Apple Blossom parade on May third seeks about 30 large flat bottom and bed trucks for floats. People with available trucks should notify Ralph R. Rosenberger or J. Howard Cather as soon as possible to arrange provision. Also notices household furniture for sale on May 1 at 1 PM at 715 South Market Street.
The desirable residence of the late Jacob H. Hillyard at 606 South Kent Street will be sold in front of the Court House at 12 o clock noon on Wednesday April 30. Sale bills may be consulted. Also offered is a butcher’s refrigerator for sale at low price by Jones Bros.
Asheville April 238 The question of whether John Francis Amherst Cecil will resign from the British diplomatic service and become a U.S. citizen looms as he prepares to marry Cornelia Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt wealth and the Biltmore estate figure in the discussion with notes of possible foreign allegiance affecting the trust holdings. Sir Esme Howard and other diplomats will attend the wedding.
The mayor urges all residents to remove trash and keep sidewalks swept ahead of the first annual apple blossom festival. Volunteers and truck owners should assist on Thursday to clear alleys, with final cleanup by Thursday evening and continued sweeping until the parade on Saturday.
Winchester police search for Helen Brewer a underage married woman who escaped the Bon Air Girls Reformatory with Cecil last week after riding into Richmond with a truck driver. The pair had been stealing automobile tires at night and were later separated. Helen may be hidden near Richmond and recapture is expected.
Members of Hickory Camp Woodmen of the World attended church services at the Presbyterian Church. The sermon for their benefit was delivered by Rev. Dr. F. T. McFaden. About 175 men formed the line outside the service. Special music included church choir pieces and a tenor solo by Floyd Haines.
The Valley Convocation of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia holds its 142nd semi annual meeting at Meade Memorial Church in White Post Clarke County beginning tomorrow evening and ending Thursday morning. Officers include Rev. Walter Williams dean Rev. John F Coleman secretary and Rev. Clayton Torrence treasurer. The program lists prayers sermons Holy Communion business Parish Reports impressions of the Holy Land confirmation devotional hour and talks on types of religious experience by named clergy and bishops.
Winchester Klan members visited Martinsburg to attend revival services at Second United Brethren Church hosted by Martinsburg Klan. Martinsburg Journal confirmed no clash with Winchester members and reported good will. Evangelist Mrs. S Hortense Ropp spoke on Christian Citizenship as Klansmen joined at the altar. Revival concluded last night.

He urges sending night letters inviting friends to visit, promising a weekend with ceremonies, orchard tours, and a Shenandoah Valley scene epitomizing “God's own Valley of Delight.”
President Coolidge was quoted in a telegram during the Senate Muscle Shoals hearing saying he hoped Ford would receive Muscle Shoals. The note, sent by James Martin Miller, was read during executive session of the committee. The telegram is tied to Ford's Dearborn Independent and Weeks testified on the stand.

More than 100 miners were entombed after an explosion at the Wheeling Steel Benwood mill mines in Benwood West Virginia. Entry routes were blocked by rock and dirt as the mine burned with deadly fumes. Rescuers from federal and state teams worked to reach the trapped men. Two miners were found alive near an air shaft suffering burns and gas exposure.
Major R. T. Barton of Winchester led the first annual memorial service for Winchester lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose at the Empire Theatre. He spoke on the order tenets and its Mooseheart charity for orphans served nationwide without cost, funded by members.
The young ladies' club of Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church sponsors a reception for the new pastor the Rev J Luther Neff and Mrs Neff. It will be at 8 o clock tomorrow evening in the Sunday school room. Refreshments served. All congregation members urged to attend. friends invited.
Citizens in Virginia are urged to pay poll taxes by next Saturday May 3 to have names placed on polling lists for the November election. Voters may register later, but the tax must be paid at least months before the first regular election following payment. 28-1p-5t.
Two American youths die in a Seine river accident while attempting to rescue four companions. Malcolm and Henry Eversole of Los Angeles were saved by boatmen. Hugh Hanger, son of H. H. Hanger of Washington DC, perished alongside Blanton. Bodies taken to a Bruiney church near Paris.
Washington reports indicate Mrs Hugh Hanger of 3717 Woodley Road and her husband left for Charles Town West Virginia seeking their missing ten year old son. An uncle Herbert Hanger of 3711 McKinley Street said the boy had traveled abroad months ago with another uncle Hoover Hanger and was to spend the summer in France.
Handley High School beat Shepherd College 4 to 3 in a close game. Poole drove in the winning run in the ninth after Hockman, Patton, and Poole starred for Handley. McKee was the standout for Shepherd. The win kept Handley undefeated in five games as they eye the Cumberland Valley League series, with Randolph-Macon Academy visiting Wednesday at 3:30.
