Franklin W Va Burns In Massive Fire After Gas Explosion
Virtually the entire Franklin business district along Main street was wiped out by a fire sparked by a gasoline storage tank explosion. The blaze destroyed the Pendleton county court house, clerk and treasurer offices, the new bank, most stores, the town hotel, many residences, garages, and stables. No deaths or serious injuries were reported, about 400 residents faced massive loss as volunteers fought the flames with buckets due to limited water pressure and damaged fire protection. News reached Harrisonburg by courier as firefighters struggled to contain the blaze through the night.

Prisoner Is Guilty In Absence In Unusual Trial
In a rare proceeding in the county court house, H. S. Walker was tried by two county magistrates in his absence for malicious destruction of property and trespass. The prisoner and his attorney withdrew, and after testimony, Walker was found guilty on both charges with fines and costs assessed.
