The Winchester area apple crop sustained serious damage from a Sunday night and Monday morning freeze. Exact extent remains undetermined as area orchardists assess losses.
Patricia Hearst prepares for a 90 day psychiatric evaluation after a delayed sentencing for armed bank robbery. She will be moved to various facilities for court ordered exams while facing state charges of kidnap robbery and assault. Judge Carter indicated possible sentence modification after the San Diego examination.
The Senate endorses a record peacetime defense outlay for fiscal 1977, approving $101.1 billion with only a $300 million trim. An attempt to cut defense programs by $500 million, led by Sen. Birch Bayh, was defeated 58 to 27, while overall spending ceiling reached $412.6 billion.
An explosion at the Lapua ammunition plant 230 miles north of Helsinki killed 37 and injured over 30. Most dead and wounded were women loading cartridges. A commission was named to investigate as evacuation and hospital treatment began. a three-hour delay in news from Lapua to Helsinki occurred due to telephone outages.
The government rolls out the reissued $2 bill to honor Thomas Jefferson with his portrait on the front and the Declaration signing on the back.
