Five Candidates Join PTA Panel For Shaw Act Seat

Five aspirants for Freder County Board of Supervisors shared a Rob inson School PTA panel. Incumbent Charles Garber and Republican David Simpson led the exchanges while Democrat Eugene Lupton and Mrs. Jesse Clare, Donald Baughman, and Mrs. Roy A. London moderated and posed questions. Each candidate had six minutes to answer ten questions plus audience queries, with three minutes for summary, on board appointments budgets and industrial development.

Egypt Syria May Approve Unified Arab Republic Plan

Egyptian Premier Aly Sabry announced a possible United Arab Republic to be based in Cairo with four days of unity talks. The plan proposes a single flag a central military command and one nationality for all while Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser is expected to lead. the three original states would be the Egyptian Syrian and Iraqi regions.

Contests Grow as July Democratic Primary Looms

Voters face a busy race scene with county and state officials seeking re election. Clarke County Sheriff W W Smallwood Jr did not file for the July 9 primary while State Senator Harry F Byrd Jr seeks re election in the 23rd district. Frederick and surrounding counties see two contenders for sheriff with Robert L DeHaven and David Fahnestock. Shawnee District Board of Supervisors sees Thelma Thompson Clore and Eugene S Lupton competing alongside incumbent Charles E Garber and Republicans David G Simpson and Donald L Baughman. The Republican slate will be chosen at a party convention.

Snow Delays End of Holidays in Frederick Clarke Counties

Snow forced Frederick and Clarke counties to shorten the Thanksgiving break to one day and require students to return on Monday. Make up days are set for April 27 and a May date at Handley High School and other city schools. Archie Frye says there is no change beyond the one day.

Contests Set for 28 Virginia Assembly Seats in Primary

Nominations for about one fifth of the Virginia General Assembly proceed as party primaries open July 9. Contests appear in at least eight Senate districts for 10 seats and in at least 12 House districts for 18 seats, mainly urban and suburban areas including Northern Virginia Richmond Norfolk Hampton Williamsburg and Roanoke. Several veteran incumbents face no opposition while major battles loom in the Richmond Henrico District with 16 candidates for eight seats.

Navy Chief Declares Thresher Lost After Deep Dive
