Handley Schools fourth graders led a mass meeting at City Hall Auditorium to urge parents to press the City Council for school funding. Superintendent Clerk presented facts on Handley teachers and budgets, noting the impact of current funding on programs and salaries.
Charles Kump, a well known resident on the Meredith Lockhart farm near Troge, shot himself with a 22 caliber cat rifle in the parlor about 8 this morning. Mrs Kump said drinking left him in ugly humor. the body was found by a neighbor after the gunfire. He was about 53, survived by a widow and five children. no inquest deemed necessary.
Special notice from Robt. B. Nelson explains a draft letter to parents missed the words Free School Books during a prior meeting. He states his support for providing free school books and urges understanding of the omission.
President Harding returns to duty after five weeks in the south and aims to clear piled-up business. Mrs. Harding’s health improves as she walks to the car at the station. The White House plans focus on sugar policy and the disposition of the merchant marine fleet with a western trip targeted for mid June.

James L. Pentz Sr. 62, former Winchester grocer and founder of the Connecticut Pie Company, died at his Memphis home after a three week illness. He moved to Memphis ten years ago from Louisville and is survived by his widow Henrietta and two children. Funeral arrangements are pending with Collins-Sturla. burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

In Norfolk VA on April 7 a 57-year-old grandmother Cora Ann Hicks sued George R. Robinson for $10000 claiming breach of promise of marriage. Hicks, a widow from Ocean View, said Robinson had promised to marry her in Cape Charles Ocean View but he denied the match noting she had since wed another man.
