Beer Legal in 19 States at Midnight Amid Jubilation

A large part of the nation moves beyond near beer at 12:01 a m local time as 19 states and the District of Columbia legalize beer containing 3.2 percent alcohol. Maryland and other areas plan early deliveries while some places ban midnight celebrations.

Gaines Speaks at Northern Shenandoah Valley League Meeting

Dr. Francis Pendleton Gaines president of Washington and Lee University opened the Northern Shenandoah Valley district meeting of the Virginia Cooperative Education Association in Boyce High School. About 300 delegates from community and junior leagues attended with Miss Mary Powers presiding. 1100 Idle Men Are Turned Back By Tear Gas

The Associated Press reports 1100 unemployed relief demonstrators en route to Springfield were driven back by tear gas near Ottawa Illinois on April 6. Most came from Chicago and eleven, including Carl Lockner, were arrested after a clash in mud at a camping ground where they slept.

Oil Seen Near Akron Crash Site Off New Jersey Coast

Bits of wreckage and oil slicks appeared in the sea as searchers scoured the Jersey coast for the airship Akron. A naval inquiry was expanded with new board members to meet at Lakehurst New Jersey. President Roosevelt met the three Akron survivors who doubt the crash’s cause will ever be known. Oil slicks were found two places, including two and a half miles from Barnegat lightship.

MacDonald to Visit Roosevelt for World Problems Talks

Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald was invited to Washington to meet President Roosevelt and discuss world problems. Plans call for a mid month sailing from London for an Easter recess visit to Washington with talks on economic and disarmament issues. Norman H. Davis moves from Paris to Berlin to confer with Hitler's foreign minister as part of the preparations.

Beer Referendum Puzzle Bypasses County Clubs in Maryland

In Montgomery County, residents will vote next year on whether beer may be sold, but beer cannot be banned from country clubs. The Maryland act, backed by E Brook Lee, lets each of 18 districts call a referendum and allows beer only within clubs meeting golf or tennis or pool criteria and with at least 100 members, half non residents.

Roosevelt orders crackdown on gold hoarding nationwide

President Roosevelt issued a drastic order banning gold hoarding after May 1 and placing the national gold supply under federal license. Buyers must surrender holdings over 100 in gold or certificates to Federal Reserve banks or face up to 10 600 in fines or 10 years jail. The move follows a Treasury plan to restore currency to banks and tighten control during the emergency.

Winchester bankers say reopened banks were licensed after federal holidays and all local banks are sound. They warn hiding money is risky and highlight benefits of deposits for individuals and the community, including circulating funds and earning interest on savings and certificates.

Claims Of Self Defense In Hyattsville Killing

Hyattsville police said Oscar Brady 28 of Brightseat confessed to killing Charles W Martin 32, a railroad employee, saying he acted in self defense after leaving a mutual friend’s home in Kenilworth Tuesday night. Martin’s body was found in Pallmont Heights, shot in the temple, brought there in his own car.

Judge warns youths as he sentences extortionist

Judge Philip Williams in Frederick County Circuit Court sentenced Donald Alles of Stephens City to twelve months in jail and a five dollar fine plus costs for attempting to extort twenty five dollars from Dr. E M Steele by threatening to kill the doctor s dog. Wegen leniency due to youth and confession Alles is to serve 60 days and be paroled for the remaining year with report requirements. The judge urged youths to avoid crime, noting extortion could bring five years in prison. Continued on page six.

Winchester Band Plans Free Palm Sunday Concert at Palace Theatre

The Winchester Concert Band will give a free concert at Palace Theatre Sunday at 3 pm April 9. No admission or offering is charged. Director Prof. W. H. Mellwee has prepared a program including Safraneck Atlantis the Lost Continent in four parts and works by Grafulla Keller Ivanovici Lake and Morris.
