Special to the Star from Richmond Virginia April 1 Delegation led by Bob Barton of Winchester rallied to defend highway funding. The administration backed a bill to reimburse a 300000 loss by raising expenditures but the measure failed on final passage with 249 votes for and 51 against.
Richmond April 6 The House trimmed highway funds by about 300000 and cut automobile license charges from 70 to 60 cents per hundredweight. The Senate upheld the move, threatening reduced state road revenues. Henry G. Shirley of the Highway Commission plans to testify against further reductions as counties push for state maintenance of more roads.

The Fairfax murder trial of Lotis Boersig paused for three hours as a juror fell ill. Sheriff Pannett testified about Boersig’s behavior and conversations during the Ridgeway home incident. The case concerns the deaths of Loretta and Kathleen Ridgeway and an assault on their mother. The prosecution seeks the death penalty. a verdict and sentence were pending.
The Winchester Rotary Club will host Frank R. Kent of the Baltimore Sun as a special guest at the George Washington Hotel luncheon. Attendance is limited to Rotary members and their guests with reservations capped at 150 covers. The meeting starts at 12 49 p m, fifteen minutes early.

April 6 Parco Wyoming at least 14 workers died in a blast at the Producers and Refiners Oil Company refinery. Two are missing and nine unaccounted for as fire and explosion caused $500000 in damage. Twenty three men worked at the plant when the explosion occurred.
Mrs. Sarah Rogers aged ninety three a member of a prominent local family died at her daughter in law's home after a long illness caused by age. Survived by seven children two dozen grandchildren and two great grandchildren she formerly lived at Milldale and was known for charitable acts. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm tomorrow at the Rockland Baptist Church with burial in the church graveyard.
The District Nurse Association announces a clinic for cripples in Winchester on Saturday April 9. Dr. Allen Voshell of the University of Virginia Hospital will lead the event from 9 30 a m to 4 p m. Residents of Winchester and nearby northern Virginia counties invited for examination. Agencies cooperating will provide funding for additional treatment as needed.
