Southern Appalachian members confess they doubted Old Dominion could finish the huge task but praise all participants in the fund drive that secured enough money to guarantee the park project.
A staff correspondent reports that lawmakers are poised to approve a measure soon with broad support. The anticipated action follows extensive debate and backing from key committees and interest groups.
The Southern Appalachian National Park Commission backs a Virginia led scheme to create Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge. Virginia would buy land with a park fund of about 1.249 million dollars, turn it over to the federal government, and expand the park as more land is purchased. The commission also approved designating the Great Smokies as a separate national park and praised Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee for continuing the fund raising campaign.
The Byrd arctic expedition begins its first lap toward polar regions aboard the Chantier after leaving Brooklyn Navy Yard. Today marks the seventeenth anniversary of Peary’s polar discovery as John D. Rockefeller Jr. expresses hope for the mission. The second trial of Ralph Pollard, county game warden, began in Frederick County Circuit Court before Judge Whiting. The Colored victim, Clifton Winfred, challenged his testimony as the defense pressed for credibility. Sheriff Luther Pannett detailed the investigation from Hackwood to Pollard’s orchard where Winfred was found after being shot three times.

Gerald Chapman, convicted murderer and bank robber, was hanged at 12 04 a m in Wethersfield state prison for the killing of Policeman James Shelley in New Britain on November 12, 1924. The execution, witnessed by seven Hartford County press representatives, followed repeated reprieves and a failed bid for commutation. Chapman's burial was privately arranged at Mt Benedicts Cemetery near the prison with limited attendance.
