The Fruit Growers of Virginia announce their winter meeting will be held in the area with safety directors and annual convention discussions on safety and fruit cultivation. The event is set for the coming winter season with dates to be announced.
The twenty sixth annual convention of the Virginia State Horticultural Society will be held in Winchester on December 5 6 and 7 with Frederick County Fruit Growers and Farmers Association extending the invitation. Officers and directors met and voted unanimously to accept the Winchester invitation and plans include housing surveys and volunteer host lists to welcome 500 to 700 visitors from Virginia and neighboring states. The meeting was led by Howard M. Hoge with reports on cedar rust cases freight rates changes and a proposed modern packing house funding. Large crops are anticipated for apples and peaches with weather favorable for budding and thinning decisions urged after possible June drop.
A big pleasing feature and two comedies plus Pathe News headline the Empire Saturday lineup. Harold Lloyd Bebe Daniels and Snub Pollard star in their best on one program with Gareth Hughes also featured in a brand new film.
A note to all patrons of Winchester High School calls a meeting at Handley Auditorium for Friday April 7 with the time changed from eight o clock to eight abte in due to Lenten services. The letter also lists sale of two mahogany showcases and a warehouse rental offer.
A Roanoke waiter Hugh L Taylor colored dining room car waiter was tried for manslaughter in the death of Atwell H Guard a Frederick county farmer struck by Taylors motorcycle on November 10. The jury could not agree and was discharged by Judge Whiting after struggling for more than two hours. The jury reported hopeless division ten to two against conviction. The defendant renewed bond with his father Pleasants Taylor and returned to Roanoke. Commonwealth Attorney T R Cather and lawyers Harry R Kern and Walter R Staples appeared.

The partners Jolliffe & Jolliffe announce the purchase of Chew Brothers stock of dry goods and shoes in Waynesboro Virginia. Goods will be moved to store rooms 17 and 19 North Main Street and a sale will be held in a few days.
The will of William Ezra Coffman cashier of the Bank of Middletown has been probated. Dated May 28 1918 it leaves all real and personal estate to Mamie Coffman wife with executorship duties and a $5000 bond. Witnesses include W S Connelly and H Noel Garner with appraisers named Rhodes Larrick Campbell Sperry Wright.
AP reports a Texas House clash as Representative Garner labels Blanton a liar provoking Blanton to threaten physical action. The exchange sparked chants of throw him out and a Speaker’s interruption, amid notes of “measly graft” in stores and mileage allowances discussed by Garner.
Friendship Fire Co No 1 holds its regular meeting on Thursday evening April 6. All members urged to attend as business of interest to every member will be discussed. Capt. Fred W Forney and Secretary G R Haines announce details.

Sheriff Pannett travels to Washington with a warrant for Ralph Stuart charged with forging the name of Winchester businessman W. A. Baker on multiple checks. Stuart, a veteran, was arrested in Washington after efforts by Winchester police and Petersburg detectives, with Baker connected as bank and civic leader.

The Rev. M. Richardson recently appointed pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South at Salem Virginia leaves today by car to preach there next Sunday. He plans to return to Winchester early next week to accompany Mrs. Richardson and their daughter to their new home.
Special to The Star reports Judge Dailey sentenced Gardner to a term in the West Virginia state penitentiary at Maundenville after convicting him on a murder indictment connected to the shooting of Thomas McKee weeks earlier near Capon Bridge. Gardner, of local prominence, maintained a stoic demeanor and offered a weak plea of self defense. Testimony tied Gardner to the fatal exchange over chickens, with accusers saying he threatened to kill McKee if he did not pay. Continued on page 4.

Mrs. Sallie Elizabeth Dellinger wife of C. W. Dellinger of Shenandoah county Virginia died at Memorial Hospital after a recent illness. She was born in New Market to J. P. Shaffer Kagey and Rebecca and was about sixty. Daughter Miss Mary E. Dellinger of Washington was with her much of her illness. The body was prepared for burial and taken to New Market for interment.
The Rev. H. G Spencer of the Methodist Episcopal Chi Piedmont West Virginia is returned by the Robinson family for funeral rites today. Old-time friends gather to pay respects as the pastor is laid to rest.
