Winchester fire department and Apple Blossom Festival officials discuss the first night parade plans for May. Awards include 5 dollars for best comic feature per company and 2.50 for second place, with additional prizes for out of town entries and strong local participation. Committees for parade illumination and carnival are named.
Winchester post office seeks to fill five vacancies: three carrier positions and two clerk roles. Over 100 applications have been asked for, with all forms to be filed in Washington by April 6. The local office provides applicant blanks for interested locals.
The Red Cross Motor Corps first aid class met in City Hall Council room with 26 members. Mrs. Bertha Hicks acting secretary announced weekly sessions at 7 15 p m on Wednesdays and Thursdays until five meetings are completed. Taylor Barr serves as instructor. The class will meet again tonight.
Mrs. Edward G. Butler of The Play Gardens was elected president of the Winchester and Clarke County Garden Club at a Berryville meeting. Officers include H. B. McCormac as first vice president, J. M. Steck as second vice president, F. Aller ton Read as secretary, B. F. Arthur Jr. as treasurer, and Ellen Boyd as corresponding secretary. The club, allied with Virginia and America garden groups, plans to beautify the Winchester Berryville highway with a $100 added allocation. Members will host Historic Garden Week events at Clarke county homes, including Fairfield Audley Clifton Scabeby Carter Hall and Tubyries.
City Manager Pilcher will speak at the Civic League gathering tomorrow afternoon at Handley Library at 3 o clock. He will outline spring city clean up plans while Mrs Whitacre discusses home vegetable gardens.
The George Washington Hotel hosts a benefit card party this evening organized by the Memorial Hospital Woman's Auxiliary. Mrs. Hunter H. McGuire reports many tables reserved and the hotel making attractive arrangements for a large community charity event.

Alabama commercial coal operators decided to shut down today pending a hearing on protests of the wage increase set by the NRA on March The shutdown, effective tomorrow, would throw about 15 000 workers out of employment in Birmingham and surrounding areas.

The jury found Courtney G. Hook not guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Lewis Newlin last November 7. Defense attorney James P. Reardon labeled four officers as the Four Horsemen and noted a Courier witness, while calling character witnesses to boost Hook’s reputation. The Commonwealth sought a conviction, detailing reckless speeding and a deadly crash. the verdict came after about an hour and a half of deliberation.

The Robert Y. Conrad Post of the American Legion plans a Miss Winchester beauty contest at Handley Auditorium on April 20. Eighteen merchants agreed to sponsor entrants, each store selecting one candidate to represent and vie for the honor. Entrants will wear evening dress. Hoye L. Riley chairs the merchant contact committee with members including R E Merchants, Mrs Claude Grim, Allen Gray, Meyer Hamburger, J H Moling Jr, H M Daree, and Mrs B M Knight.
Paris reports the French government issued a public warning to accept pay reductions as a path to avoid a threatened strike by officials. It cites loans driving rising interest and claims no options remain except the economic program or cessation of payments. Premier Doumergue pushes a nationwide public works plan to be financed publicly.
In Washington on April 5 Senator Huey Long challenged Edward Richter, attorney for D. D. Moore of New Orleans, to "step outside" during a tense exchange before the Senate finance committee over New Orleans horse racing. Order was restored and questions continued. The dispute began when William C. Grace testified he had bet on a New Orleans race track and all his selections won.

New York April 5 Stocks showed a fairly firm undertone despite scant stimulative news. Metals oils and packing shares edged up modestly while most groups remained in a narrow range. Investors eyed liberalization of securities law as likely and bank clearings for the week ending April 4 reached 4.823 billion dollars, up 12.6 percent from 1933.

Carl E. Kater 54 a Frederick County resident and grocery operator ended his life with a razor in an old corn crib on Railroad street. Found by William Hodge after an apparent struggle, the death follows years of nervous disorder. Survived by widow Ada F. Iley and three brothers, funeral set for Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with services by Rev. Dr. L. A. Thomas and burial at Mount Hebron.
Mrs. El bert H. Gary widow of the steel magnate died at her Fifth Avenue home after a long illness. The former Emma Townsend she married Mr Gary in 1905. Her passing ends a long chapter linked to the Gary family and steel industry prominence.
