Clark elected Speaker asHouse opens session amid debate on belligerency resolution. Pacifist opposition clashes with Lodge and Clark while U S state of belligerency with America is referenced.
Champ Clark Democrat of Missouri won the speakership in the sixty fifth Congress after a dramatic opening to the extra session. James Mann Republican Illinois conceded defeat with Clark receiving 217 votes to 205 amid packed galleries and high guard.
At Baltimore market close prices are quoted for corn and grain with spot figures around $2.16 per bushel. Rochester dealers are seen offering about $2.15 for corn as the session ends. Stenographer and typist positions advertised in city office notices.
Services yesterday marked the first use of the new reredos and marble altar at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church. The project, a Baker family memorial by their sons, includes mahogany furniture, stained glass windows, frescoing, new electric lighting, and white marble tile.
Three recruits were accepted for service in Company I, Second Virginia Regiment: Joseph Wigginton, Edward Grim, and Frederick White. No orders yet on Second Infantry stations. A Martinsburg area group was considered for enlistment later, and a future volunteer call by President Wilson was rumored.

Mr. Charles H. Schentex, former Roads superintendent for Frederick County, shows health gains while traveling from St Augustine Florida toward Spartansburg South Carolina. He had spent time in St Augustine and is now en route north. Cattle market reports list choice steers at 10 25 to 11 25 dollars and choice cows at 6 to 6 50 with various grades in between.
Grace Lutheran Church installs the Brevitt Memorial Chime of ten bells totaling about 15 000 pounds. Funded by the 5 000 dollar trust of David S Glaize for his son David Brevitt Glaize who died in 1914. The chime will be dedicated Monday at 7 30 with an Easter Sunday 8 45 concert kickoff.
Armed soldiers and railroad detectives guard key Norfolk and Western and Southern railway bridges in the Shenandoah Valley. Virginia National Guard troops were placed on duty at Riverton Junction with plans to cover more bridges soon as muster of the Second Virginia Infantry proceeds.
DOJ legal experts say the Reed bone dry act fails to fully bar intoxicants from Virginia and other dry states not adopting a bone dry law. Two loopholes allow entering personal baggage with liquor and shipping for medicinal industrial or scientific use. The experts argue the act won’t stop a man from carrying whiskey into dry territory.
The women of Winchester are urged to meet at the Handley Library on Tuesday April 3 at 3 30 o clock p m to organize a Winchester branch of the Virginia War Relief Association. Initiation fee is one dollar, the only expense for membership. Mrs Hunter McGuire, Chairman.
Mrs Rathman wife of baker W Rathman was badly hurt when their truck collided with Deputy Sheriff Lewis Armel at Braddock and Cork streets. She sustained back and leg injuries and was treated at a nearby residence. Mr Rathman was scratched. Armel unharmed.
Senator Henry Cabot Lodge was knocked down in his Senate office after a confrontation with a Boston pacifist and a Cambridge woman. The pair accused Lodge of cowardice for supporting war, sparking a tussle that drew police. The fight ended with Lodge, the pacifist Bannwart, and David B. Hermann involved and officers arresting all parties.
Local Club No. 3 Implement Dealers of Virginia held a Friday afternoon meeting at the court house with full attendance. Over thirty delegates participated as representatives from the implement industry discussed topics and spoke on mutual interests among farmers manufacturers and dealers.
Mrs. Charlotte Grubbs longtime tollgate keeper on the Berryville pike at Opequon hill died yesterday at her Berryville home three miles west of town. She was 84 and died of paralysis after years of declining health. Her Confederate husband William Grubbs was killed at the Wilderness after a visit home from service. Continued on page four. Due to ill health, West Water Street jeweler Thomas P. Graybeal relinquishes his business and sells to Joseph Hodgson and Richard R Brown Jr. They will operate the shop going forward as Graybeal recuperates.
