Hitler warned Britain he would cancel the 1935 naval accord if war with Germany seemed likely. In a 62 minute speech at Wilhelmshaven he accused democracies, defended Germany against encirclement, and warned Poland indirectly while recalling past promises.
London April 1 British reaction to Hitler's threat to denounce the Anglo German naval treaty showed smiles in British naval quarters. Officials said Britain would keep a three to one advantage over Germany's navy regardless of Hitler’s move. The foreign office noted the treaty cannot be denounced legally.
Rome reporters say Italian papers mock British and French pledges to aid Poland while noting unease about repercussions for Italy. Il Popolo di Roma says Britain assumes Poland defense.
