Compromise or contest Storm clouds over Barton Springs dispute

A petition filed April 25 with the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission seeks Outstanding National Resource Waters status for Barton Springs and Barton Creek and related zones. Backed by Save Barton Creek Association and others, the move aims to influence 1991 standards under the Texas Water Code and Federal Clean Water Act. Local officials have approved support, but the commission has not yet acted. The issue follows debates among environmentalists, developers, and landowners in Travis and Hays counties. The effort highlights potential federal water quality standards and land-use restrictions amid talks of endangered Barton Springs Salamander status.
