Colored envelopes slow machine mail processing
Colored envelopes especially red are not readable by mail-processing machines. They must be separated from the main stream and handled manually, slowing delivery. Greeting cards, often in bright envelopes at Christmas, follow this path. Mailers improve service by handing these items into the stream at drop-off.
