TCI Opens New Center for Digital Compression Tech
Rural areas gain first access as Tele-Communications Inc and Liberty Media finalize merger steps with the Justice Department. John Malone says the deal will boost telecom options and digital services. On April 7 TCI launched a $100 million National Digital Television Center near Denver to convert analog signals to digital and distribute them to cable and DBS homes nationwide. Initial rural sites include Cheyenne Wyoming Wahpeton North Dakota Grand Island Nebraska Beaumont Texas Durango Colorado and The Woodlands Texas. The center already compresses and transmits digital signals for Pay Per View and other services.
