Edwards Aquifer Pollution Threats Spotlight Barton Springs Link
Residents in northern Hays County warned that chronic water quality degradation of the Edwards aquifer from urban growth may contaminate Barton Springs. The report notes 85 percent recharge via sinkholes and creeks and cites USGS findings that impervious cover raises pollutant runoff, risking reduced dilution as Austin projects 1.9 million people by 2020 and CAPCO growth shows Hays as a high-growth county. Existing Edwards Rules cover only part of the watershed, leaving half of affected area outside regulatory reach and prompting calls for stronger site specific standards and broader land use protections.
