Texas Senate OKs 1996 97 budget with targeted boosts
The Texas Senate unanimously approved an $80.2 billion 1996 97 budget that raises funding for schools prisons and health and human services without new taxes. The plan adds roughly 2.6 billion over the House version and includes a modest pay hike for the state s lowest paid teachers. The budget relies on state sales and lottery revenue and contemplates 250 million set aside for welfare funding if federal changes occur.

Hard work rescues library from water
Water leaks flooded the Village Library and Cultural Center on February 20. Library Board member Steve Schubert, Mel Larkin, Maggie Bains and fifteen volunteers moved books and audiovisuals to dry areas, used fans and dehumidifiers, and later rug cleaners fogged the building for mildew. The weeklong closure followed as mildew remediation and shelving adjustments prepared for future repairs.
