Extension Sought for Salamander Study at Barton Springs
March 20 dated document cites several reasons for the extension in the Federal Register filed March 9. First, a need for more thorough documentation of the salamander range. Concerns about adequacy of search efforts to determine if distribution is limited to the Barton Springs complex. Experts note extensive searches in springs across a several county area. Some caves may support the salamander but have not been adequately surveyed. A September report from the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District adds significant new information on land use effects, water quality, and potential threats to Barton Springs.
