An organic gardener outlines November steps for starting an asparagus bed. Choose a site away from main beds, dig an 18 to 24 inch deep trench, add 12 inches of manure, top with rich soil, plant crowns 18 to 24 inches apart in 10 to 12 inch rows, mulch, and water well. Do not harvest for 2 to 3 years. plants can produce for up to 50 years with good feeding and sun. Plan east-west rows for shading and wind protection, and order seeds this fall.
