Soil Stewardship Week Observed in Wilson County

Wilson County Soil and Water Conservation District announces Soil Stewardship Week from May 8 to May 15 1983 with theme Living Waters Harold Jarutowicz district chairman notes focus on conserving water resources and offering technical assistance for soil use erosion control drainage and land management since the district's 1940 organization September.

Living Waters Soil Stewardship Week Observed May 8 15 1983

Soil and Water Conservation Districts and partners invite participation in the nationwide Soil Stewardship Week May 8 to 15 1983 with the theme Living Waters. The effort emphasizes water quality, conservation, pollution control and sustainable use aided by a 16 page booklet from the National Association of Conservation Districts and distributed through local districts Extension Agents and community groups.

Sheltered Workshop Organized In Wilson County

A sheltered workshop committee formed May 3, 1983 at Floresville City Hall under the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Members include County Judge W. D. Cox and Mayor Carl Eschenburg with officers Holcomb chairing Machost secretary and Taylor treasurer. They aim to have a functioning Floresville workshop for local handicapped residents by next fall similar to the San Antonio Goodwill project.

Magnolia Cafe Announces New Closing Days

Velma Rice owner of Magnolia Cafe on 123 N Stockdale says the restaurant will close on Thursdays but remain open Tuesdays for Stockdale Lions Club meetings. She invites customers to visit the rebuilt Magnolia Cafe with an expanded breakfast lunch and dinner menu.

Bear Band To Hold Annual Spring Concert

The LaVernia Bear Band plans its annual Spring Concert and Ice Cream Social in the High School Cafetorium on Tuesday May 17 1983. Band Boosters organize the event and invite the community.

Plum Pudding Day School Groundbreaking Held in LaVernia

Denice May and Lynne Hild of LaVernia broke ground for Plum Pudding Day School near the Post Office. The Christian day care will provide supervision, nutritious meals, story times, and homey activities guided by a former teacher and a nutrition supervisor.

To Meet Stockdale Lions Club Tuesday Meetings

The Stockdale Lions plan meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday at 7 30 p m at the Magnolia Cafe on Highway 123 N. Local businessmen are invited to support the organization.

Oak Park Downs Opens In Leesville

Oak Park Downs begins public racing at Leesville on Highway 80 two miles south. The 5/8 mile oval features a 330 yard straight, clay-sand base, four starting gates and a six-horse walker. LARS Inc leases the property. Wanda Adams notes Sunday races and family entertainment with quarter and thoroughbred racing, plus a concession stand.

La Vernia Athletic Banquet Honors Local Athletes

The LaVernia Athletic Association hosts its annual awards banquet on Friday May 20 1983 at 7 00 p m in the High School Cafetorium with a covered dish dinner. Families should bring a meat dish a vegetable or salad and a dessert for their group. All former students and junior high athletes will be recognized.
