Floresville officials report only one candidate filed for the 15 member home-rule charter commission as of Monday. Any Floresville resident 18 or older may serve. filing ends Thursday at 5 p.m. at City Hall. The Aug. 11 election will feature a two part ballot with early voting starting July 25.

Floresville Moves Toward Home Rule Charter Drafting Body
The city plans a two part ballot to seek voters approval to form a commission to draft a home-rule charter and to list commission candidates. If needed write-in space may appear on the August ballot. Floresville previously considered home-rule in 1998, where 602 voters participated and the measure failed 286 to 316.

Wilson County grants 10000 relief to La Vernia fire department
Wilson County commissioners approved a 10000 advance to the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department keeping the force operating for about ten weeks. They also enacted a 90 day burn ban with fines and agreed to seek two courthouse square improvement grants. Fire Chief Kip Workman warned the department is near collapse amid an unresolved funding dispute with City Hall.

One Killed in Wreck as La Vernia Man Is Arrested
A Seguin woman, Brooke D. Engelke, 19, died in a head on crash on Twin Oaks Drive near La Vernia. The pickup driver, Mark A. Marlowe, 20, was arrested on intoxication manslaughter charges after a 3 a.m. collision with Engelke’s Buick LeSabre. Brent Shelton, 17, survived. Marlowe posted bond and is due for arraignment July 26 in Floresville.

Girls' response to fire praised as textbook perfect
Three sisters aged 12 14 and 5 woke to a fire at their Sutherland Springs home on June 20 alerted by a smoke detector. They evacuated a dog and themselves to a neighbor then called 911 securing the door behind them. Fire officials called the actions textbook perfect crediting detector timing and prior safety training. Damages were estimated at 7300 with no injuries to residents though fish in an aquarium were casualties.
