Elmendorf Council Divided Over Legal Fees and Police Ordinance
Aldermen Sauceda Ball and Walters backed a move to have the city attorney at all closed sessions while Pefia-Ortiz failed to second and the motion died without Casanova present. An October 2000 attorney general opinion deemed prior fee resolutions invalid or at least improper. Slaughter criticized the ordinance as drafted and the council tabled action, then Slaughter resigned as mayor for health reasons, citing pride in restoring the police department and reducing debt.
