Reds Execute U S Officer in Viet Nam War News

An American Army lieutenant was executed by Communist guerrillas 30 miles north of Saigon in broad daylight. Two Vietnamese military men traveling with him were also killed. The three bodies were found by a military patrol. The American’s name was withheld. Route 13 has seen past ambushes and other advisers have been killed on this highway. In Laos, Premier Souvanna Phouma said peace chances are very slim and he distrusts all sides after the Pathet Lao attack on control commission helicopters.

Bishop bans glossalalia in California Episcopal churches

In a pastoral letter Bishop James A. Pike prohibits encouraging glossalalia or speaking in tongues in the California diocese. Exorcism of alleged possession now requires explicit authorization and psychiatric collaboration. He cites danger to church peace and sound doctrine.

Birmingham Peaceful March Marks Racial Integration Push

In Birmingham Alabama a peaceful march of more than 1000 Negroes from New Pilgrim Baptist Church to a park and back drew fire hose and dog warnings but ended without violence. Police Commissioner Connor allowed the march after earlier tactics. over 1400 arrests were made in four days as Justice officials urged restraint.

Busy Session Faces Congress
