A New York Associated Press typed copy was fed into a Semagraph device and produced type in the Charlotte Observer office 611 miles away. Buford L. Green, with 26 years in the Observer composing room, supervised the test which transmitted ten thousand words and produced seven lines per minute.
J Edgar Hoover announced Franklin Pierce McCall confessed to abducting five year old James Bailey Cash Jr from his bedroom and murdering him. McCall said he disposed of the body in nearby woods after taking a ransom note, and attempted to deliver another ransom demand through a neighbor.

In Portsmouth Ohio a flat bottom boat overturning on the Ohio River after a late swimming party left three girls dead and five rescued as siblings recount panicked passengers and a motorboat backwash that capsized the overloaded craft. Charles Webb and Emma Webb led the rescue after recognizing pleas for help from the hull.
A witness recounts a big plane struck by lightning during a routine flight from Rantoul Illinois to Denver. The ship had departed the Illinois city before the incident occurred.
