Washington reports James Roosevelt sought 2500 to add two rooms to his Framingham estate but FHA denied the modernization loan. Bank staff noted the Roosevelt name while FHA cited policy and refused. Some say the official offered a softer ruling upon learning the identity.
Joe Hiestand of Hillsboro successfully defended his state doubles trapshoot championship in the Ohio State meet at Vandalia. He scored 96 out of 100 in the three day event, though Ned Lilly of Stanton Michigan led with 98 targets but was ineligible for the championship.
Goodman and Ward, both U S amateurs, were defeated 4 and 2 by Hector Thomson and Gordon Peters of Britain in Walker Cup Scotch foursomes. Charley Yates and Ray Billows edged Stowe and Kyle 3 and 2 to even the score.

In Scranton Pennsylvania debris and gas hid the cause of a blast that killed ten miners in the Yolpe Coal Co field. Inspectors and rescue teams 700 feet underground recovered bodies and six injured as officials consider gas from nearby abandoned workings. A new ventilation system will be installed to aid debris clearing. Earlier, eight died in an April 27 gas explosion at the St. Clair mine near Pottsville.

Undersecretary Sumner Welles, after a Roosevelt meet, called such methods barbarous and noted U S disapproval voiced previously by Secretary Hull. The statement stressed it was not diplomatic to Franco or the Japanese.
In Centralia Missouri on June 3 a night invasion at a rectory left Elder Rev Charles Emerg 65 dead and housekeeper Martha Rice 30 beaten. Investigators from state and county agencies pursue two assailants one of whom fled after Emerg was shot during a struggle. Rice identified the slayer as a Negro.
Cen sus Director William L. Austin said the recession is forcing Americans to return to farming. A January 1 survey found one in nine farms now houses three residents who lived in cities five years ago.
Chicago police report that Robert Nixon, 18, alias Thomas Crosby Roview, confessed to slaying four women and a girl in Chicago and Los Angeles. The victims include Mrs Florence Johnson, Mrs Florence Thompson Castle, Miss Anne Kuchta, and Edna Worden with her daughter Marguerite. Nixon implicated Earl Hicks and Harold Green in related deaths.
The Senate recessed after a tense session over the 3.4 billion relief bill. An amendment to bar WPA staff from political activity failed 39 to 37 with Barkley voting against it. The chamber also rejected a power activity restriction tied to private utilities, while approving 965 million for PWA loans and grants.
The flying boat Guba arrived in Honolulu from San Diego at 11 82 A.M. bearing six men for wild New Guinea research. The craft, a flying laboratory built for the American Museum of Natural History, carries Richard Archbold and a crew of five aboard.
