Ohio school officials at the state education convention proposed reorganizing districts so the smallest would have at least 1,500 pupils. Harold Vincent of Canton said the plan aims at economy and better schools, creating about 25 county-wide districts if approved.
Eight Clinton county officials start new terms with 30 percent raise in basic salary set by the 1940 census based base pay. Prosector, clerk of courts, sheriff and recorder receive 15 percent increases due to prior adjustments. Probate judge begins February 9 and treasurer September 5. three officials keep current salaries. Swearing in not coordinated.
Fifteen passengers and three crewmen escaped injury when a Piedmont Airliner made a forced landing shortly after takeoff from the Tri City Airport near Johnson City Tennessee. Co-pilot James Craig said pilot H. H. Hutchinson operated the controls after a loss of oil pressure in the right engine caused mechanical trouble.

A Michigan National Guard B 26 bomber crashed six miles from its base in Detroit during a voyage from McDill Field Florida. Fighting rain and sleet, the craft burned on impact killing at least four men including three Air Force personnel and a guard officer.
Governor Lane commuted 29 year old James V. LaGuardia of Youngstown Ohio from death to life imprisonment for participating in a three man rape near Baltimore on June 4 1947. The case was decided in the Baltimore circuit court and the sentence was changed yesterday.
Judge John H. Druffel continued for two weeks the suit by Stephen W. Young against Fred and Mary Cherryholmes overcharges on rent to four Air Force officers at Clinton County Air Force Base. Evidence showed furniture and furnished rooms increased rents. officers paid for furnishings and utilities. New House Democrats and many veterans avoid seeking a seat on the Un-American Activities Committee. In Ada County jail an elevator malfunction nearly let five prisoners on the fourth floor escape. Deputy R E DeWitt chased, blocked the cage, rang the alarm, and the inmates surrendered once the elevator halted on the ground floor. Sheriff A B Foster confirmed the attempted breakout via a deputy's binding.
The United Nations Security Council passes a British sponsored resolution by eight votes with three abstentions ordering Israel and Egypt to cease hostilities in the Negev desert. Israel is told to retire mobile forces and Bunche to set up an insulation zone. The council schedules a meeting at Lake Success on January 7 to report on enforcement steps.
