In Jackson Kentucky on December 29 Mrs. Viola Wickline fired four shots in Breathitt County Court as Johnny Shepherd 18 was called for an examining trial. Shepherd died hours later from stomach wounds. Two spectators Moss Noble and Moore were wounded. Wickline and her husband William were arrested. Her son Gabbard died in a shooting on Christmas Day.
Ohio finished the 91st General Assembly with a quiet adjournment after a brief breathing spell. The 92nd session won’t convene until next Monday amid low attendance in both chambers and the departure of Senators Pollock and Lloyd. A late House vote approved delaying county real estate reappraisals to 1941 with conditions. Frank A. Hoiles 70 publisher of the Alliance Review died in a Route 45 crash near Salem. Clyde Cross 38 of Weirton W V and five others injured including Mr and Mrs F P Stremmel and son Chester of Steubenville and R J Lloyd aged 51. Hoiles led the paper for 42 years and was a former state representative and Alliance Brick Co president. He seeded the paper in 1891 with partners before buying the Review. He also served two terms as Ohio Chamber of Commerce president.
The Ohio Education Association discussion on teacher tenure proposed permanency after three years on probation replacing yearly contracts. About 1,500 attendees in 23 meetings heard calls to modify the certification revocation process to involve the state board of examiners. R. W. Solomon was re-nominated without opposition as president for the coming year.
Washington December 29 The highway and grade crossing fund distributed by Secretary Wallace allocates Texas $12 273 957 as the largest single allotment for the next fiscal year starting July 1. Ohio is apportioned 7 710 117 for roads and related projects in Objo.
Burbank California December tragedies leave 27 dead or missing from four air disasters in December. United Airlines San Francisco Los Angeles flight crashed near Rice Canyon with 12 bodies removed after weather and rugged terrain hindered recovery. Victims include A L Markwell Edward Ford Jr W A Newton and pilot Edwin Blom among others.
Dayton police arrested two young thieves, Wendel Hoop aged 23 and Frank Grigsby aged 19, admitting to stealing 13 automobiles between September 23 and December 27, according to Inspector 8. Wen del.

David D. Hilsinger aged 69 former Bascom hardware dealer was struck by a Baltimore and Ohio train in the railroad yards. Police said he became confused when a train whistle blew and stepped in front of the locomotive.

Tacoma, Dec. 29. Ten year old Charles Mattson remains missing as search efforts pause after guards are withdrawn and Dr. W W Mattson says no contact will be attempted until authorities advise. DOJ agents take charge with no explanation for the halt.
