The Associated Press reports the Christmas holiday period saw 301 traffic deaths in 48 hours from midnight Monday to midnight Christmas Day. Ohio exceeded forecasts with 13 deaths. two pedestrians were among the victims. Weather varied, with snow and slippery roads in places, and overall holiday driving was hazardous.
About 50,000 West Berliners crossed into East Berlin by noon despite the Christmas Day killing of 18 year old Paul Schulz who was shot atop the Berlin wall. The 16 day visiting period began amid smiles from East German guards but a Red Cross worker cautioned that appearances hide danger. Schulz died six hours after being wounded during the barbed wire incident near the Oberbaum Bridge.
A 40 year old man in Denver remains in satisfactory condition seven days after receiving baboon kidneys in a historic operation. The unidentified patient underwent the first such transplant performed by a joint team from the U S Veterans Hospital and Colorado Medical Center.

Smith was found hiding in a wooded area. Wallace remained at large. Shaw reportedly unlocked his cell and freed the others.
North Pole AP report says Santa Claus completed his annual world tour in one day despite an obsolete aircraft. He had permission from American officials to violate regulations and from NORAD. He declined to discuss the flight but said he would try again next year.
