East German guards fired on a man trying to flee to West Berlin as others admitted West Berliners for holidays. A fusillade after a shouted halt echoed near barbed wire while West Berliners queued for Christmas permits.
Snow and sleet crippled much of the South with airports and several highways closed. Memphis and Jackson areas faced heavy icing and up to 12 inches of snow in parts of Mississippi as temperatures fell to freezing. Police set up taxi service to move doctors and emergency personnel to hospitals.
The Clinton County Courthouse and Wilmington City building will close from noon Tuesday to Thursday morning for the Christmas observance.
In Ottawa, two armed brothers burst into a Catholic rectory during Mass, fatally shooting four people and wounding a fifth. Police say both brothers used two guns each and wore masks. Roger Binette, 21, killed himself as authorities cornered him and his 17-year-old brother Reginald, who faces capital murder charges.

An 86 year old Washington Court House resident, Mrs. Ethel Garnes, died from burns after a weekend fire discovered by her visiting daughter. Police forced entry. the kitchen stove burners were found on high. the coroner ruled the death an incident.
House Democrats predict enough members will be present to pass the three billion dollar foreign aid bill by Tuesday at the latest. President Johnson lobbies Congress from the White House amid holiday travel and backchannel calls as lawmakers head into a lengthy session. The remaining Senate schedule is unclear with most members home for Christmas.

A massive air sea operation saved many aboard the Greek liner Lakonia after a weekend fire left most of the 20,314 ton ship ablaze. About 1,046 people were aboard including 651 passengers and 395 crew. 470 to 800 were reported rescued with possible duplication. Rescue planes and lifeboats swirled 180 miles northwest of Casablanca as survivors clung to life in 64 degree water.
