Vatican dispatch says the new pope in his first Christmas address urged world Christian unity and peace while warning that atheistic communism may suppress sacred concepts in many lands. He urged faith to set aside violence yet defend Christian principles, and paid tribute to his predecessor Pope Pius XII.
The Rev. Maurice F. McCrackin aged 52, a pacifist minister, was sent to a federal prison for six months for refusing to respond to an IRS summons about income tax due. He was carried to jail in a wheelchair as officers moved him from his cell and to the courtroom as needed. He also received a $250 fine and his appeal deadline loomed as his lawyers filed notice shortly before the cutoff.
The Our Lady of the Angels school fire claim rose to 93 with the death of 6 year old Susan Smaldone on Monday night. The tragedy began December 1 and the blaze drew national attention to safety in parochial schools.
Governor elect Michael V. DiSalle announced three more state aides joining his transition team. Rankin M. Gibson of Toledo will handle legal research and extraditions. James Maroon of Union City becomes finance director. John Bush of Columbus to head the Commerce Department. Previously named were Maurice Connell and Jerry Poston. Gibson formerly worked at DiSalle, Green & Haddad and taught at the University of Toledo. Maroon previously directed economic research in Indiana and Northeast Missouri State College. Bush is a former state purchasing agent. Other appointees include Everett S. Preston as highway director and Robert H. Terhune as agriculture director. Elyria Mayor Grant Keys is highway safety director. The administration takes office Jan. 12.
The Associated Press reports little hope for a pre Christmas settlement ending paralyzing strikes at American Airlines and Eastern Airlines. National Mediation Board officials in Washington sent new bargaining procedure telegrams as talks may restart in a few days. Eastern pilots mechanics and flight engineers continue idle with about 31 000 booked for cancellations and American expects 30 000 passengers today and tomorrow with daily losses around one million dollars since the stoppage began.
David S. Smith a 20 year old OSU student charged with first degree murder in the sex slaying of 24 year old neighbor Janice Porter entered Lima State Hospital for a 30 day psychiatric observation. He confessed to shooting Porter after a criminal assault on a pregnant woman and has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. If found sane he will be returned to Columbus for grand jury action.
George Lacy of Hamlin Lincoln County went to bed in 1916 after a dispute over a pet calf and never rose again. Neighbors recalled a strong hunter who fell ill after the measles and remained bedridden until his death at age 71.
In West Hartford 340 deaf students at the American School for the Deaf celebrate a silent Christmas with a hand sign performance. A school chaplain opens with a parable shown through rapid arm movements while St. Peter is portrayed by silent gestures.
In 1930 Autaugaville Edward and Ercille Pearson began giving remaining Christmas toys and food on December 26. Their act expanded to a 10 mile radius with 60 stations. About 1200 people are reached annually with gifts from their home lawn into the countryside.
