Wilmington post office faced its busiest Christmas with more than 100000 pieces on Monday. Postmaster James F. Smith announced a Friday noon closure for Christmas Eve and a skeleton delivery staff for Friday afternoon and Christmas Day.
Addison Copeland Sr. leads the News-Journal printing effort for the Christmas edition now in its 31st year with the plant crew. The First National Bank signs were installed by John Ketzner and Modern Neon Sign Co with help from Bank executive Robert Hartman. At Wilmington High School Messiah drew 800 attendees and a cat caused stage disruptions before the set was torn down for Monday’s Charity Ball setup.
Harold J. Stewart of Clarksville was named to fill the unexpired term of John Hite on the Clinton County Board of Education. Stewart, a former teacher in Adams township and Norwood schools, has run a Clarksville general store and serves as village council president. Hite resigned after moving from the county last fall.
Vernon C. Agers, 44, of Hamilton, and Hershel D. Dick, 29, of Terre Haute, Ind., were arraigned before a U S commissioner on a charge of transporting a stolen automobile from Clinton, Indiana to Hamilton. Both were ordered held for a December 29 hearing. Agers bond set at $2,000, Dick at $1,000.
Ohio's 98th general assembly, to convene January 3, may run on a streamlined four month schedule under Senate president pro tem Margaret Mahoney and House speaker elect John Cantwell. They proposed joint hearings and equal committee loads to save time and money, aiming to cut the session from six months seen in 1947.
Nationalist warships at Tangku kept Tientsin's port secure as Communist forces attacking the city were driven back. Government sources report about 1,500 Reds killed with 800 more wounded in last night’s actions and widespread repulses across northern China.
Route 730 southwest of Wilmington reopened Wednesday after flooding from Cowans Creek and the dam project. Water subsided and mud and brush were removed from the road with a snow plow after a one week closure with no road damage reported.
Seventeen families in Clinton county will receive a Christmas dinner funded by $194 donated at the White House restaurant. Bill Brooks reported the total with Mrs. J L Boyd and Mrs. Stanley Kellough collecting names with Miss Elizabeth Sharkey, county welfare director, to avoid duplication. Each box will cost $12 to $14 and include a chicken.
In Sugamo prison Tokyo Hideki Tojo and three war leaders were hanged after shouting Banzai cries and a pledge to Nippon. The seven condemned were cremated, with ashes scattered to prevent graves. The priest Shinso Hanayama attended the executions at 12:19 to 12:20 AM.
A three year old girl, Vicki Jeanne Snyder, remains missing as her mother is charged with kidnapping from her foster parents in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Christmas gifts stay under the tree as relatives plan to keep the home ready for her return on Christmas Eve.
Christmas turkey prices reached record highs nationwide with 18 pound turkeys averaging around 80 cents per pound and some stores quoting 89 cents. Larger toms cost about ten cents less per pound. Demand remains strong while supply tight with the 10 year low crop and high feed costs cited. Oranges are plentiful and marketed as holiday fare.
Batavia Java Dec 23 Reports to the United Nations Security Council state that Dutch troops are killing Indonesian civilians. The U N Good Offices Committee sent the charge after 18 staff returned from Kaliperang near Jogjakarta where they were isolated for four days. Witnesses described fatal shootings including an unarmed boy, seen by a Secretariat staff member and his young daughter.
Mayor Frank Fickel reports three youths threw acid at 16 year old Guido Stella last Saturday during an argument. The attack may cost him his right eye as juvenile authorities handle the case in Wickliffe.
The News-Journal unveils its 1948 Christmas Greetings Edition with 54 pages, the largest in history and third largest ever published. The piece traces the greeting tradition to 1918 Lima Times start and credits Warren P. Meilly and later editors for expanding the concept across newspapers nationwide.
In Cleveland area actions, Apex Electrical Manufacturing Co and Permold Co of Medina help laid off workers find other employment. Apex laid off 300, plans 400 more. Permold laid off 75 from 350. Apex forms a placement bureau with IAM officials and has placed 15 workers with 40 more interviewing. Permold uses its personnel department to locate temporary jobs and canvasses local farmers and businesses.
Government data show the consumer price index for mid November slipped eight tenths of one percent from October, led by a drop in food prices for the fourth straight month. The index stood at 172.2 percent of the 1935-39 average, with costs 4.4 percent above a year ago and 74.6 percent above August 1939. Foods alone fell 1.9 percent, while clothing and household furnishings edged lower.
Robbers entered the W. P. Noble operated implement store near Bloomingburg last night and escaped with about $1500 in cash. They did not take a batch of checks Noble had received in a safe yesterday.
The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports Ohio farm real estate index stood at 259 on November 1, unchanged since July 1, with average value per acre near 158 dollars. Nationally the index rose through 1947 and remains above the 1920 peak in most states as buyers and sellers adopt a wait-and-see stance.
