The News Journal presents its annual Christmas Greetings Edition in Clinton county and Wilmington territory. It reaches about 30 000 readers with messages from merchants professionals and others wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year along with thanks for past patronage and wishes for health and prosperity in 1957.
The News-Journal prints a Christmas front page featuring only local pictures and stories for the season. Page 2 carries the usual world news, while the remainder highlights Christmas happenings in the city and county.
The News-Journal will be closed all day Tuesday and no newspaper will be issued. This pause allows all employees and carriers to spend the Christmas holiday with their families.
In Wilmington a post office supervisor identified as the father of four and grandfather of 11 traced a letter to Grandmother Starbuck at Salem RFD 3. He verified the sender and arranged postage to ensure John’s Christmas greeting reached Mrs Clara Starbuck in time.
Friday programs at East End Midland and other schools featured Santa visits, gifts, treats, and music. Students sang carols, exchanged gifts, and enjoyed ice cream and cookies while PTA and parent volunteers organized activities. The day ended with an assembly and a Christmas message as schools close until January 2.
President Eisenhower received an 800 pound fruit cake from the Young Men's Republican Club of Niagara Falls New York as preparations for Christmas accelerate across Clinton County and the region. Residents plan four day holiday observances while stores extend hours and churches hold special Christmas services. Heavy southbound traffic and extra bus sections aid servicemen and others heading home for the holiday season.
Santa and volunteers deliver holiday baskets to needy families in Clinton County. Cooperation with Miss Elizabeth Sharkey county welfare director provides meals and gifts to brighten Christmas.
The Jaycee-ettes auxiliary of the Wilmington Junior Chamber of Commerce held a Christmas party at the Children's Home for boys and girls. Mrs. Frank Cunningham performed humorous readings, Mrs. Don Williams accompanied the singing, Santa Claus arrived with stockings of food and candy and a gift for each child. Mrs. Richard Townsend chaired the committee.
Mrs Eisenhower and the president distributed twin pictures to 600 White House staff members this Christmas, each bearing a misengraved autograph and a posed image recalling past holiday traditions.
