Clinton County traders report a late surge in Christmas buying with stores open nights. Ten days ago pessimism gave way as a holiday rush lifted 1948 sales toward or just above 1947 levels. Local strength attributed to the Clinton County Army Air Field and high farm income sustaining the economy.
Tokyo dispatch reports seven Japanese war criminals were hanged at Sugamo Prison between 12:01 and 12:35 a m Tokyo time. Among the executed were Hideko Tojo and six others including Kenji Doihara Koki Hirota Seishiro Magaki Heitaro Kumura Iwane Matsui and Hertaro Kumura. The Army issued a brief notice with no further details and promised full minutes after witness interviews.
A city council committee approved Mayor Kellogg's plan to raise the payroll by 1.36 million dollars annually. The recommendation includes cost of living raises from 6.9 to 10.1 percent for city staff.
W J Baisch of Wilmington and Brancher hunts in Ashtabula county and bags a 15 point buck weighing about 250 pounds on the second day of the Ohio season. He had previously killed in Colorado and this year marks his first double deer season with two success stories.
Two inmates McShane a Detroit businessman and William H Bucksburg a Pittsburgh carpenter left Ohio Penitentiary after receiving gubernatorial commutations from Gov. Herbert. McShane returned two years ago and flew to Detroit with the alias George Mason. Bucksburg left after 11 days back in Pittsburgh attire unchanged.
Ohio State Health Department has supervisory authority over private hospitals treating tuberculosis. The department may issue regulations governing private hospitals under state law. Opinion requested by State Health Director John D. Porterfield.
Dover city council approves first quarter water bills for 3,300 customers totaling about 12,090 with a paid in full stamp to mark payment. The decision affects 1949 billing.

Bond set at 2000 each. A third man was released. The trio were arrested in Mansfield after police seized a rented truck loaded with trees.

William Chase Hull, 68, a veteran railroad executive born in Ohio, died yesterday in Corinth. A former vice president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, Hull will be buried in Cincinnati. He was born in Bond Hill, a suburb of Cincinnati.

Dunseith said a divorce suit was filed last August but no decree awarded.

German-born Richard W. Oppenheim, 62, longtime director of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, died after being found unconscious in his studio. He had missed rehearsal, collapsed, and died at Aultman Hospital, cause reported as a stroke.

A nationwide search was under way for 21 year old Jeanne Morgan Braget charged with kidnapping her child from foster parents. District Attorney Carl B Shelley said a felony arrest warrant was sworn out for Braget and her husband John M Braget of Tacoma Washington. The three year old Vicki Jeanne Snyder was taken from the child's grandparents who had adopted her. The child was legally adopted by Harry M Snyder of Harrisburg about two years ago.
Bittman Ohio December 22. The village council will operate the 100 home Willow Broom housing unit even after the federal government abandons the project. There are 139 families on the waiting list while 100 tenancies exist. Local industry has strained housing in the northeastern Wayne county town of about 44500.
The body of 55 year old Clarence J. Hess was found on the Sandusky Bay shore near Medusa. Acting coroner Harrison Pratt says the death appears accidental.
Washington reports the United States suspends all Marshall Plan aid to the Netherlands East Indies pending Indonesian Dutch hostilities settlement. ECA chief Hoffman cited full State Department consultation and noted current allocations to the East Indies remain in question while China reconstruction aid was also paused.
Democratic chairman J How ard McGrath forecast that the upcoming Congress will pass a single package labor bill. He said it would repeal Taft Hartley, reinstate the Wagner Act, and revise Wagner per Truman 1947 ideas. McGrath stressed no talks with Truman and denied reports against elimination of Taft Hartley. He urged outright repeal as a party platform and campaign promise.
