In Paris, France prepares for a Sunday runoff between incumbent Charles de Gaulle and challenger Francois Mitterrand. Decisive support split among six candidates in December’s first round, with de Gaulle at 45 percent and Mitterrand at 32 percent.
The Dominican Communists appear to have failed again in turning minor quarrels into nationwide revolutionary violence. A split in leadership within a major Communist controlled union signals weakening support as a government workers strike nears settlement. Violent attacks on sidewalk stalls provoke widespread protests and concern among observers.
The United States asked North Viet Nam to clarify conditions in Ho Chi Minh first peace feeler for talks to end the war. He was hospitalized at Ft Gordon then Walter Reed Army Hospital, with no recent medical bulletins on his condition.
