Vienna reports a rising flow of refugees crossing into Austria with more than 1,100 tonight and around 1,000 the night before. Since Oct. 23 fighting began, about 140,000 have crossed. 65,000 sought asylum in Western countries. The report notes fog hindered border patrols.
The Vatican says Pope Pius XII will deliver his 18th annual Christmas message this year on Sunday December 23. The speech will be broadcast in about 28 languages to reach audiences worldwide.
Paris revealed for the first time a wingless radio controlled jet monster resembling a long aluminium spindle with four legs. The performance remains guarded and it is powered by a single jet engine. In London British aviation engineers eased secrecy around a five jet plane.
William Michael, city official, recounts Ralph Baker of Reeder Road Clarksville seeking the court after a parking meter overstay. Baker apologized for a brief delay and, despite no ticket appearing, opted to be honest about the red flag. Michael reports Baker’s integrity impressed him.
Rhode Island’s governor elect Christopher Del Sesto 49-year-old former Democrat faces a court test over absentee and shut-in ballots as 340 remain to be counted. He led incumbent Dennis Roberts by 509 votes 194 848 to 194 339 after machine ballots on November 6 and says the governor’s race is settled.
In Belfast a televised address by Lord Brokeborough warned of an ongoing attack on a patrol car as police clashed with IRA raiders near Lisnaskea. A bomb near Newtown Butler damaged a police station slightly. one officer was wounded. Police captured two raiders amid the six counties crisis.
Sheffield Corp of Dayton becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Bendix Aviation Corp of Detroit via 230000 Bendix shares exchanged for Sheffield stock. Value estimated around 14 million dollars. Sheffield makes precision instruments and industrial control systems. Louis Polk, president of Sheffield, announced the deal in Dayton.
Eleven U S Army and Navy men used an electronic crevasse finder to blaze a 632 mile trail across an unexplored Antarctic reach from Little America east to Marie Byrd Land in six weeks. Seabees of Operation Deep Freeze plan to build an American station at the trail end for the International Geophysical Year program.
In Phoenix an 18 month old girl Cruella Alires survived a crash that killed 12 of 13 aboard a 1938 Chevrolet sedan. The car hit a Southern Pacific Golden State Limited train at a level crossing, speeds estimated 70 to 80 mph. Nine Alires family members died, leaving five orphans aged up to 11.
Orvis T. Henkle, 85, treasurer of the International Livestock Exposition and former executive vice president of the Union Stockyard and Transit Co., died Monday in Chicago. He was born in Sabina Ohio.
A 63 year old man identified as Willie Parker was shot in the back and neck as he left his Cleveland apartment. He died at Charity Hospital. Police say Martha Carter, 46, who also lives there, admitted the shooting following an argument over Parker's drinking.
BATAVIA The new home of the North Union Two volunteered fire department at Summerside Clermont County was badly damaged by an explosion early today. Chief Ray Riggs said 95 percent of the $24 000 structure was destroyed probably from a gas leak in the heating system. The fire headquarters had been in use only since Oct. 6.
Cleveland reports the federal government filed a condemnation suit to take 74 acres adjacent to the Air Force jet base at Youngstown for a housing project. The action seeks title to the land.
Poland and the Soviet Union sign a detailed agreement governing future Soviet troop operations in Poland. It reaffirms Polish sovereignty and temporary Soviet presence with veto powers over force size and movements, while key items like deployment and use of installations await three months of special arrangements.
The Ohio State Highway Department opened sealed bids for 16 highway improvement projects totaling 21,529,998 dollars. The letting covers 36 bridges and 52.29 miles of roadwork, with year to date highway investments at 159,804,666 dollars. Including Clinton County AFB relocation on Ohio 73 near Wilmington for 4.09 miles, John R. Jurgensen Co., Inc. of Newtown bid 391,653 dollars against a 427,000 dollar estimate.
A 45 year old Columbus man was knifed to death Monday after he attacked his slayer with a broom handle. Joseph Edward Baker 51 was bound over to the Franklin County grand jury on first degree manslaughter charges in the death of Shannon Garnes 45. Police say Baker claimed Garnes was attacking him with a gun and the fight grew from a long standing feud.
New York voters name Around the World in 80 Days the best film of 1956 as chosen by the Committee of Exceptional Films of the National Board of Motion Pictures.
Prime Minister Nehru prepares a 15 minute nationwide radio television address for CBS NBC and MBS to be broadcast at 11 15 p m EST after talks with President Eisenhower in Washington and Gettysburg. They discussed world problems and tour the Eisenhower farm and Gettysburg area.
A 350 man Egyptian police detachment arrives in Port Said to back U N troops during the withdrawal of British and French forces from the Suez Canal northern gateway. The UN plans to pull out soon after the powers depart, with indications of complete British French withdrawal by midweek. A French Foreign Legionnaire is killed by guerrillas as others are captured.
Athens County Sheriff George Bateman died at his residence in Athens at age 63 after months of illness. He did not seek reelection and planned to retire at term end. His son in law Deputy Harold Shields succeeds him after being elected sheriff and set to take office in January.
A federal grand jury indicted Creutz Platers Inc officers Otto Creutz and Anna Brinkmann on tax evasion charges. Creutz allegedly failed to report 29 000 dollars of income from 1949 to 1954, with about 10 500 dollars in tax due. Brinkmann allegedly underreported 9 000 dollars in 1952 1953, with back taxes around 20 000 dollars.
A St Louis University professor O S Makar 47 and his wife Alexandria Sophia renounced American citizenship to live in the Soviet Union. Makar a geodesy and photogrammetry expert fluent in Russian Ukrainian Polish and German said he sought a university chair in the USSR and noted better scientific conditions there. The couple boarded a plane to Moscow after mailing their decision to the U S Embassy in Stockholm.
Vice President Nixon departs for Vienna to assess on the spot the Hungarian refugee crisis in Austria. He travels with Deputy Attorney General William Rogers and eight aides, flying this afternoon for a three day visit with Austrian officials seeking more U S aid to cope with refugees fleeing communist Hungary.
