Ohio's General Assembly moved toward a holiday recess as the House and Senate clash over a new sales tax measure. The bill keeps a 3 percent levy and extends a levy on food through January 1 1937, while the Senate amends to remove alcohol by the glass and tighten farmer exemptions.
Ohio Governor Davey urges an $8.9 million relief appropriation with a state relief commission to allocate $5 million by population and need, counties to repay state for five months, then match for seven months. He targets sales and liquor taxes and bonds reforms to aid local financing.
Preliminary 1935 federal farm census shows Clinton County with 67,407 hogs and 19,210 cattle on 2,230 farms. Corn acreage leads at 60,285 acres, wheat 36,192 harvested, oats down, hay up, Irish potato yield up, average farm value $6,305 on 115.2 acres. figures subject to revision.
In Wise Virginia Judge H H W A Skeen today denied a new trial for Edith Maxwell a 21 year old school teacher sentenced to 25 years for murdering her father. The news notes a request to delay tests on constitutional challenges to the New Deal utility law by seven holding companies.
The Post-Gazette reports State WPA Administrator Edward W. Jones has begun censoring newspapers critical of his political WPA leadership. Harrisburg sources say Jones banned information about WPA spending in Allegheny County and instructed District Administrator John F. Laboon to withhold such data.
Two pilots and two passengers escaped death when Braniff Air Lines plane lost a motor midair. Pilot Lee Bishop landed the craft near Childress Texas at 6 30 A M. The 12 seat plane was badly damaged but all occupants Walter Cline Ervin Burns and George Farnham survived with only shock. Mail was delivered and passengers continued on another plane.
Mrs Martha Steiger, aged 108 tomorrow, reflects on the strange longevity and a life pattern she feels must have a purpose. She cites a large family including three daughters, twelve grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren as part of her enduring story.

In Bellefontaine on December 12 the public schools resume classes after a two week closure due to a scarlet fever outbreak. The health board lifts the fever quarantine as students return.
At the inter national naval conference Japan was rebuffed by the United States Britain and Italy with support from the British dominions on a plan for equality. Norman H Davis said growth would surge not shrink and warned it would upset the Washington and London treaties. France and Italy opposed on procedural and scope grounds.
Federal financing was made available to wire farms and homes as rural line construction expands. Rural electrification administrator Morris L. Cooke said loans apply to lines built with Federal funds and privately financed. Local groups or utilities must channel requests, with Ohio Farm Bureau Federation signing wiring loan contracts in Shelby and Miami Counties.
The Ohio Government Survey recommendations for trimming economies in the State Agriculture Department will be aired Friday before the House agriculture committees. Chairman O W Whitney Delaware invited survey and department representatives for the discussion.
Minneapolis December 12 P The Justice Department was asked by Chief of Police Frank Forestal to assume the investigation into the assassination of Walter Liggett publisher and editor. Mrs Liggett sent the telegram and Attorney General Cummings noted federal action may be limited by lack of federal law. Police re checked the alibi of Isadore Kid Cann Blumenfeld, named by Mrs Liggett as the killer, with Chief of Detectives James Mullen saying the alibi was intact.
Washington officials say the United States Britain Ireland and Canada reached a principle agreement to exchange reciprocal landing and operating privileges to enable commercial transatlantic flight. Experimental flying next spring appears likely.
State Representative P. J. Dunn offered passes for children to tour the Ohio State Penitentiary in Dover on December 12, calling the visit more educational than a French lesson. The outreach framed the tour as a civic learning experience for youths.
The League of Nations stalls oil sanctions as Italo Ethiopian tensions rise. In Geneva plans to settle the war are handed to the council after sanctions debate. Anthony Eden urges an early council meeting to hear peace proposals acceptable to Italy, Ethiopia, and the League.
Ellis Parker chief of Burlington County detectives denied communicating with foreign agencies for years and refused to confirm or deny tracing any Lindbergh ransom money.
City Council selected Gilbert H. Sollars today as the first city manager. The transition to a city manager form of government will take effect January 1. Sollars came here after twelve years with a Columbus electrical firm. Peter H. Curtin is the mayor.
