In Columbus on December 5 the news notes Thomas Bricker declares candidacy for Ohio governor. The House taxation committee votes 17 to 3 to send a constitutional amendment legalizing state lotteries to voters in the May primary. Debates proceed on income, sales and liquid fuel tax measures in the lower chamber.
Franklin scene of a bank hold up as two armed men battle Marshal William E. Graham and cashier George Gates. A robber was killed, the marshal wounded, and the robbers fled in a commandeered car after recovering about $7,000. A bystander also aided by taking an ignition key to trigger the confrontation. Two women were kidnapped during the escape.
In Columbus on December 5, Governor Davey secured a House reconsideration of a milk control measure that had been defeated the previous day.
The House taxation committee recommended a broad income tax plan proposed by Representative Frederick Butler. It would tax incomes 1 to 7 percent above federal exemptions, repeal some intangible taxes, and tax them as income. A school levy repeal faces opposition and possible amendments to satisfy school officials. votes on both the levy and tax measures will shape funding for schools and other services. The Senate may resist a similar bill previously passed in another session.
Clarabeth Zehring 17 of Germantown Ohio won the grand national 4-H style contest title in Chicago, earning best dressed farm girl honors among 200000 competitors from 41 states. Her self made brown and tan suit dress cost 34 dollars 12 cents including shoes and hat. The grand champion was chosen from four national class winners. Zehring’s wool or silk school dress ensemble was named best among entries in that category.
The board of county commissioners voted to remove Noah L. Carr from the Fayette County Home on December 20 for neglect of duty and misfeasance in office.
Unemployment estimates used by government agencies show slow progress in reducing jobless rolls over the past two years after a brief early surge. The 14 to 15 million range in 1933 is cited, with a peak of about 15.07 million in March 1933 and a fall to 11.18 million by October 1933, followed by fluctuations and a October-September decrease of about 261 thousand.
At the international livestock show in Chicago on December 5, judges awarded prizes to QHIQANS and several riders. J F Hoks from Rockford D C 8 Arn from Kenton L A Bradford from Wellington and Green and Willets from East Liberty earned multiple awards for sheep. Charles M Williams of Cincinnati won the blue ribbon in the five gaited class on Dennis King and placed fourth in the three gaited saddle horses over 15 hands two inches with Impressive Fashion.
A Meriwether County farmer group visited the Little White House on Pine Mountain and quoted President Roosevelt as favoring reduced interest on farm loans and mortgages and land purchases by tenants. The delegation said the President urged lowering private loan rates with a possible target as low as three and a half percent.
The Cleveland News reports a high political authority says Judge Will P. Stephenson of the Ohio Supreme Court is the leading candidate to succeed U S District Judge Benson W Hough of Delaware who died two weeks ago. Other contenders include Common Pleas Judge Charles G White of Batavia.
New York December 5 President Roosevelt offered a tip on the bankers who advised him the national debt could rise to between 55 and 70 billion dollars. He urged checking financial journals from 1933 banking crisis. Wall Street searched archives but found no light on the identity.

Ellen Gibson, a former slave and the oldest Clark County resident, died yesterday at age 112 in Selma. Born in Loudoun County, Virginia, she moved to Ohio with her husband Nimrod after the Civil War and settled in Selma, where she lived for decades. Nimrod died several years ago.
