Five more trapped miners were saved in good condition from the 3000 foot deep east shaft at the potash mine in Moab Utah. The final death toll reached 18 with ten others found dead earlier in the day and eight known dead before the rescues. Investigations were announced to probe safety measures.
More than 50 planes and ships aided a search for 11 men aboard two strato tankers missing between Bermuda and Nassau. Items found 335 miles southwest of Bermuda included navigation charts and airplane parts with Air Force markings. Debris and an oil slick suggest a possible Atlantic plunge east-northeast of Miami.
Venezuelan ex-dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez, jailed in Caracas after a Florida arrest for embezzlement, complains he was treated like a pig in Florida. Jail captain Robert Scharlan says he spoke to Perez Jimenez who said he was fine and notes he lost weight from plain prison food. Perez Jimenez is in an air-conditioned cell with a TV and additional purchasable comforts.
Gulzari Lal Nanda aged 65, a former labor leader regarded as a moderate leftist, has been named Indian home minister. The appointment fills one of six cabinet posts created after Prime Minister Nehru reshuffled his cabinet to strengthen the Congress party.

State Liquor Director Donald D. Cook announced all state liquor stores and agencies will close Monday in observance of Labor Day. Department offices also will be closed.

Albert Belhomme, a U S Army turncoat from Ashland Pennsylvania, left Red China for Hong Kong with his Chinese wife Hsio Ying and their three young sons. He plans to move to Antwerp Belgium soon. His mother, living in Ashland, says he has not explained his defection.
In Tay Ninh near Saigon a US Army helicopter was shot down by guerrilla ground fire killing two aviators and wounding four others as they attempted to pick up combat troops. The deaths raised American battlefield fatalities to 99.
