Understanding Hunger Through Gastric Contractions and Balloons
Dr Anton Carlson and colleagues studied hunger as rhythmic stomach contractions. Using rubber balloons in the stomachs of humans and dogs, they linked contraction cycles to hunger pangs and explored the roles of appetite memory, taste, and external factors like alcohol. They observed that hunger can exist without appetite and that starvation alters hunger perception and brain activity.
