Survivors of the Edward H. Cole land at New York report the vessel was sunk off the Highlands of New Jersey. Presence of submarines off Barnegat and Nantucket Shoals, separated by 200 miles, suggests numbers and a plan for a port blockade.
Paris reports a major German push toward Paris along the Marne has stalled. French forces held the line near the Marne and repelled attacks from Chateau Thierry toward Paris while countering near Villers-Cotterets and Faverolles. Allied casualties and matériel losses include shells and vehicles captured at Fere En Tardenois.
Abernethy protests Wayne county ballots claiming uncounted votes and improper ballot distribution. In New Bern Dortch leads Abernethy in the congressional race with expected margins of 200 to 300 votes statewide and a Wayne county majority around 1,585 as Sampson and other counties report results.
Nearly 1,000 city workers walked off today in Washington mainly from street cleaning and water departments demanding a minimum pay of 3 dollars per day. The walkout ended with the dispute unresolved on wage basis.
German U boats attacked the Atlantic coast as Washington said American anti submarine forces are ready to meet the threat. Navy officials vow to guard troop transports flowing to France with flying boats chasers and other craft in force and to find and destroy submarines in home waters. Some officers suspect a base on a southern desolate island or hidden bay and others point to bases in the Gulf or West Indies as the raid underlines Germany’s last card. Continued on Page Hight.
New York reports say a steam ship a schooner and two or three other vessels were sunk off the Jersey coast by German submarines. The Ed ward H. Cole sailing vessel is listed among the losses. Authorities halted outgoing ships before noon and American destroyers are believed to be pursuing the subs amid rumors of German submarines off the coast.
The Supreme Court ruled the 1916 federal child labor law unconstitutional and invalid. It sustained injunctions preventing government enforcement and restraining a Charlotte cotton mill from dismissing child workers.
The City of Columbus passenger ship in the Atlantic Coast trade is reported sunk after leaving Savannah for Boston. The 5,433 ton vessel, built in 1904 at Chester Delaware, was sister to the City of Athens, sunk in a collision with a French warship off the Delaware coast last month with heavy loss of life.
June 3 Savannah reports no ships leave the port under official direction. Earlier New York wire indicates the steamship Carolina with 220 passengers and 120 crew, 3125 tons, missing after being attacked by submarines, 12 hours overdue. The navy orders Atlantic coast stations to aid the Carolina, while Havana Port closes to outgoing ships May 0 to May 25. Ella M Willey sunk by gunfire off Block Island reported to a passing steamer.
The office of Lieutenant Section Commander Elliott, in charge of the sixth naval district, declined comment on orders about German submarines reported near the Jersey coast and Nantucket. Elliott said actions must remain secret, while word of sinkings spread through the city and sparked calls to the Dispatch about U boats.
