Local returns show Charles L. Abernethy leading William T. Dortch with Craven Carteret Onslow Duplin Pender and Pamlico counties backing Abernethy. Estimates place his margin between 900 and 1100 with Sampson still in doubt and a possible second primary in the fifth judicial district.
Report from the Picardy front says the German division around Cantigny suffered mass casualties and was rendered unusable until reorganized. American forces report heavy bombardment, aerial activity, and prisoners numbering 251 after captures near Cantigny and Soissons.
Goldsboro June 1 Hon W T Dortch is claimed winner in the congressional race over Hon Charles L Abernethy of New Bern by about 1000 to 1400 votes. Dortch supporters say Abernethy will find the morning lights harsh as results show Dortch carried Wayne and Sampson counties and many outside his home county. Returns were slow but Dortch appears to have around 1000 votes.
Meagre returns from Wake and Franklin counties show Judge Thomas H. Calvert performing well and unlikely to be blocked in the second primary. Franklin County reports are slow while Calvert leads in Franklinton where Senator Person is unopposed. Calvert’s nomination momentum is widely noted.
Edwards ville Jr June 1 The 11 men accused of lynching Robert Praeled pro German at Collins on the night of April 5 were acquitted after the jury deliberated minutes today. Cheers greeted the verdict as it was announced at 4 o clock. Only felts were taken according to Ports Tom the jury room.
German forces fought five miles west of Soissons along the Aisne and advanced to Fontenoy and Nouvron. They crossed toward the Marne from Crateau Thierry to Dormans and pressed toward Rheims from the Ourcq river region. Several thousand prisoners reportedly taken.
Huntsville Texas June 1 six Negroes were shot at Dodge ten miles north of Huntsville in unrest following the shooting of a Negro draft evader Thursday. It was unclear if fatalities were from officers or a mob. Two of the dead were the mother and sister of George Cabiness who died resisting arrest for draft evasion.
Reports from Rome say Mount Vesuvius entered a violent eruption with late today advices received. Observers monitor ash and lava activity as authorities issue warnings and residents prepare for possible fallout.
Washington reports German gas shells mounted a major offensive to push toward the Marne with mustard oil shells spreading fumes and forcing Allied retirements. General March said Germans may halt at the Marne while American brigades prepare for a possible role in the looming battle.
Miss Zula Fussell and Ralph Powell wed on a porch at the Fussell home near Teachey with Rev. C. V. Brooks officiating. The couple will reside on Cliff Street in Wallace after June 1, with a post-ceremony supper for families and friends in Wallace.

Washington reports state department notices a peasant revolt in Ukraine as Germans seek to harvest crops by force. Russian sailors plan to attack the Black Sea Fleet at Novo Rossick while Turkey and Germany commit mass murder in the Caucasus against Armenians. Russia protests Brest-Litovsk terms and Armenia massacres amid stalled Ukraine peace talks as Austria and Finland sign a peace treaty.
June 4 report says French hold the Marne with bridges and crossings securely in Allied hands. Germans pull back to the plateau above the river, attempting a westward push while British forces in the east halt progress near Rheims, Soissons, and the Soissons–Amiens axis.
Dispatches from Budapest report that woman suffrage failed in the Hungarian parliament franchise committee by 12 to 9. Count Tiszza was among the opponents of the measure.
German forces attacked along a 100 mile front from Noyon to Rheims as French and British units countered with rearward thrusts. The Marne sector from Chateau Thierry to Verneuil held. Curise river crossings fell to French in places while the Picardy front remained quieter. Reinforcements moved to Italy as British troops cleared Kurkuk area of Turks and air raids over Paris failed to bring in enemy aircraft.
London June 1 British aviators destroyed twenty hostile airplanes yesterday and drove six down and shot another down with the loss of only one plane. Field Marshal Haig announced. Thirty two tons of bombs were dropped during the day and twenty tons last night. Karlsruhn station and workshops were bombed with one ton of explosives.
The Post Office Department announced that about 100 sacks of mail from the southern states and destined for the 16th and 18th infantry and various field artillery units were destroyed by a fire in France on April 25. The loss included parcel post packages and printed matter as the moving mail station burned due to a cigarette stump.
An overturned milk pail and sun rays caused a fire at Henry Corner's Overton home. The deflected sunlight ignited the boards and the house was destroyed.
Harvard's varsity defeated Yale by two lengths on the Hoosa Tonic river in the two mile race. Harvard finished in 15.58 minutes.

German papers report a plan by Rural Society Limited and the Association for Internal Colonization to replace Alsace Lorraine’s population with German settlers. The scheme, backed by a 7.5 million mark capital, aims to purchase farms on the Lorraine frontier and colonize them with war veterans, while many locals have been denationalized or evacuated.
The French war office issued an official statement reporting a withdrawal of French forces between the Oise and Aisne rivers north of the Carlepon wood heights, west of Audigncourt, Fars and Fontenoy, effective June first.
